I voted for Obama thinking he would almost certainly move to the center after being elected. Boy, was I wrong. The guy is so far left he makes FDR look like Hoover.

The good - it looks more and more like he’s going to end up with, at best, a watered-down healthcare bill so compromised and chopped up with special interest, Pelosi-inspired amendments that it won’t really matter in any fundamental way. He’ll save face by calling it a “revolutionary healthcare program,” but, in fact, it will be middle-of-the-road mush.

The bad - it’ll ding us all a pretty penny without solving the healthcare soaring-cost problem at all.

Funny, it was Eisenhower you wanted universal health care. But he was a Republican, so we can’t talk about that.

And Someguy53 relies on USAToday for his polling? It explains a lot- they’re the Fisher-Price of new rags.

Hump, The “overview” is 80% of us like the healthcare we have now. We don’t want all healthcare to be reduced to the lowest common denominator. I don’t mind the government providing healthcare (like Medicaid) for those who can’t afford it. I just don’t want long waiting lists and denied service because a procedure costs too much. My son is battling an aggressive form of cancer and would have been dead a year ago if he had lived in Canada or anywhere else that has “government” healthcare.

Sarin gas and yellow cake uranium. Not in the amount they expected, but still enough to do some serious damage. As well knowing at one time they had it, ask anyone that has a brain that fought in Desert Storm.
Google does work and you could find the info for yourself, IF YOU WANTED. I will help you so you don’t remain clueless.
Her are a few with the Sarin gas proof.

Googled: aarp poll of employers want to provide insurance
Found some articles on AARP’s perspective regarding health insurance coverage. Found this from the folks at Money/CNN business: “Health Care Biggest Headache For Small Employers”

    Published: June 10, 2008: 12:21 PM EDT

    http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/10/smallbusiness/nfib_healthcare.fsb/index.htm

The article talks about small business insurance costs (small pool vs large pool of employees) and AARP’S “DIVIDED WE FAIL”.

All the TALK about “COSTS” are Dividing U.S. It’s one of the “Tricks” used to Stall Legislation until Health Care Reform “DIES” on the Table (so to speak).

Look at who talks about “Costs” - mostly Republicans (I’m a Fiscal Conservative who pays for my own Health Insuance) VS who talks about Reducing Costs (President Obama).

If Health Care Reform “Dies” (AGAIN), blame the Ones that Divided U.S. with their Rhetoric & Vote for Those (Rep. or Dem.) Who Can Work to Make It Available to All (those who can pay for their own & those who need help paying for coverage.

Make it Affordable & Available to Folks (business as well as individuals) who want to pay less insurance premiums – Just Do It the Next Election Cycle (2010).

There’s alot of U.S. baby boomers who are A.A.R.P. members & more likely to vote! It’s the younger folks who will end up paying for the mistakes of their elders. Who can afford to place “Mom or Dad or themselves” in a Nursing Care Facility if They are not able to take care of themselves….

Think About It - What would U Do if it happened to U or someone U love & the Insurance Company decided to Deny Benefits (for what ever reason). For those who like their insurance coverage now, look at the policy & note the amount of $$ the policy covers over your “life-time”. It may be a couple of million dollars - but have a major catastrophic injury (or illness) or need major surgery - Adds Up & You May Find Yourself with out an Insurance Provider. It’s Called “Cherry Picking” by providing insurance coverage for the more healthy population & finding ways to boot U out if U become too expensive to insure.

Aw, come on. FDR wasn’t that bad. He listened to a few financial air heads, but for the most part, he was a relatively conservative Democrat.

Social Security, when first started, was completely voluntary, and the government couldn’t touch it, no way. Then stupid Lyndon Johnson and congress decided to make those lil’ retirement funds available for them to spend, cuz after all, it was just sitting there, right?

So, while I don’t agree with EVERYTHING FDR did, he did have some pretty good ideas.

Like the TVA, the (completely voluntary) social security administration, and the man knew how to handle a war.

Even from a Republican’s perspective, he was a pretty bleeep good president.

I did not spend much time looking online, but I did not find any proof to back up your claim of Eisenhower’s health care. Not saying your wrong, I just did not find anything. I just wanted to compare his to Obama’s muck. Everything I here about Obama’s is VERY bad and is being pushed through with lightning speed. In every case, this alone is BAD!!!!!! As well people on both sides of the isle thinks it is VERY bad and not what is best for the country.

    marktrail
This is the truth behind SOCIALIZED health care. I will say this again, I have a friend that has a rare blood disease and in the USA currently he is geting the treatment he needs, he talks to others in forum all the time that know they are going to die before the government run health care takes care of them. I am sure if Obama gets his socialism bleeep pushed through, he’ll stop getting his treatment and die.
As well, liberals conveniently started calling it universal more recent, nice job!

    gbrucewilson
I will admit, I believe there is a problem with our health care, but no way shape or form should the government (Republican or democrat) take it over. We the people need to make a stand. I would take over inflated health costs over the government controlled care and EXTREMELY high taxes that would follow.

More Googling: study - who pays insurance premiums

    “Health Insurance Costs”
by The National Coalition on Health Care:

    • “A recent study by Harvard University researchers found that the average out-of-pocket medical debt for those who filed for bankruptcy was $12,000. The study noted that 68 percent of those who filed for bankruptcy had health insurance. In addition, the study found that 50 percent of all bankruptcy filings were partly the result of medical expenses.(9) Every 30 seconds in the United States someone files for bankruptcy in the aftermath of a serious health problem.” (See article for more details)

Re: President Eisenhower’s health care plan

I found an article posted by the American Heart Association (AHA):

    http://www.circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/91/1/8

Eisenhower believed in a free market solution to health care. His proposal was very modest including the provision that health benefits be untaxed.

(Incidentally, that is an issue that President Obama is debating within his own party.)

The AHA cited a 1993 report from the Senate’s Democratic Policy Committee that Eisenhower’s proposal was a “middle ground” approach.

While it was not universal health care, Eisenhower’s plan was nonetheless rejected by both sides of the debate who argued that the proposal was unnecessary or inadequate.

The AHA noted that the stumbling block for health care reform has always been its “overcomprehensiveness”.

The point made that Eisenhower was a Republican is an interesting one. His political leanings were not clear and both parties tried to recruit him in 1952.

Reply to ‘Lewreader’ : Here’s what our Founding Fathers said -
    ——
Article I, Section 8 - Powers of Congress:

The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States; —
    ——
This is why uniform Social Security/Medicare taxes for ‘general Welfare’ are constitutional, as would be other health care IF our Congress approved it . And if you are really interested (pro or con) in health insurance, study the issue and write to your Senators/Representative; they always respond to serious constituents.

LIT said: “Aw, come on. FDR wasn’t that bad.”

Lewreader said: “…our founding fathers…wrote a lot about what the federal government cannot do.”

fogey said: “This is why…taxes for ‘general Welfare’ are constitutional…”

    George Washington said:

“Let there be no change in the Constitution by usurpation. Change may seem to be an instrument of good, but it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed.”

He was warning against the wrongful interpretation of the enumerated rights of the federal government.

The General Welfare clause, noted Washington, was not a grant of power. To interpret it that way would be an “encroachment” on the intent of the Constitution.

This opinion essentially held true until the election of FDR.

The New Deal was justified on the basis of the General Welfare clause.

From 1935 the Supreme Court overturned 8 of 10 New Deal proposals–including Social Security– on the basis that they were unconstitutional.

FDR attempted to “stack” the court by seeking the authority to appoint up to six additional justices who would uphold his legislation.

This was referred to as the “Revolution of 1937”. It precipitated a Constitutional crisis.

FDR explained to the nation, “we have therefore reached the point where we must take action to save the Constitution from the Court and the Court from itself.”

Chief Justice Hughes said that FDR’s plan was a threat to the “Supreme Court’s historic role as guardian of the Constitution.”

Hughes thought that if the federal government could so broadly interpret the “general welfare clause”, then the policy of “tax and spend” would become an enumerated power.

The court, in an act of self-preservation, then decided to uphold key aspects of the New Deal.

Said one Justice, “We voted against the Constitution to save the Court.”

(Sort of like George Bush saying, “We suspended free market principles to save the free market system.”)

Chief Justice Hughes later wrote that the court surrendered to FDR because their resistance “might have resulted in even more radical changes.”

Mr. Spock, like I said, I don’t agree with EVERYTHING FDR did. Most parts of the New Deal were socialistic at best. He listened to a few financial air heads.

However, Social Security (which, as I’ve stated was completely voluntary and untouchable by Congress) was nothing more than an annuity program, plain and simple.

He wasn’t the best President, to be sure, but for a Democrat, he was fairly conservative. Certainly more so than the current administration, or for that matter, any administration in the past 50 or so years. He was no Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, or George Washington, but then, who is these days?

I think he did well with what he was given, for the most part.

I have a BETTER EXAMPLE of GOVERNMENT mandated health and hospitalization! Ask any vet who has spent any time in the VA SYSTEM!!! They’ll give you an earful of how WELL the GOVERNMENT takes care of their health needs.

Whatever happened to PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY? The real problem is how to provide affordable health under a capitalistic system! There has to be a balance between accessible health care and contained costs. I got a $15 raise in my gross pension and a $40 raise in the cost of health care plan that is part of my pension. Plus the health care plan has a $2,500 yearly deductible plus only pays 75 to 80% of the hospital bill.

I work in the healthcare field. What no one ever reports on is that the VAST majority of people coming through the ER who claim to have no insurance or the ability to afford it or their ER visit have more than enough money for junk food, tattoos, piercings, nice cell phones, laptop computers, have cash in their pockets for sodas and chips from the vending machines, and almost all of them smoke and drink. They’ve learned to scam the system for free health care, never pay their bills, and someday when they eventually can’t fight off the bill collectors anymore they just file bankruptcy and start all over again. THAT is the reality. And most of them come in for BS reasons, like sore throats, coughs, headaches, menstrual pain, etc. The stories I could tell would infuriate you. And you are paying for it all, suckers.

A look at some of Obama’s claims in his prime-time news conference:

OBAMA: “We already have rough agreement” on some aspects of what a health care overhaul should involve, and one is: “It will keep government out of health care decisions, giving you the option to keep your insurance if you’re happy with it.”

THE FACTS: In House legislation, a commission appointed by the government would determine what is and isn’t covered by insurance plans offered in a new purchasing pool, including a plan sponsored by the government. The bill also holds out the possibility that, over time, those standards could be imposed on all private insurance plans, not just the ones in the pool.

  34. NancyPelosi

    NancyPelosi said, 4 months ago

OBAMA: “I have also pledged that health insurance reform will not add to our deficit over the next decade, and I mean it.”

THE FACTS: The president has said repeatedly that he wants “deficit-neutral” health care legislation, meaning that every dollar increase in cost is met with a dollar of new revenue or a dollar of savings. But some things are more neutral than others. White House Budget Director Peter Orszag told reporters this week that the promise does not apply to proposed spending of about $245 billion over the next decade to increase fees for doctors serving Medicare patients. Democrats and the Obama administration argue that the extra payment, designed to prevent a scheduled cut of about 21 percent in doctor fees, already was part of the administration’s policy, with or without a health care overhaul.

Beyond that, budget experts have warned about various accounting gimmicks that can mask true burdens on the deficit. The bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget lists a variety of them, including back-loading the heaviest costs at the end of the 10-year period and beyond.

  35. NancyPelosi

    NancyPelosi said, 4 months ago

OBAMA: “You haven’t seen me out there blaming the Republicans.”

THE FACTS: Obama did so in his opening statement, saying, “I’ve heard that one Republican strategist told his party that even though they may want to compromise, it’s better politics to ‘go for the kill.’ Another Republican senator said that defeating health reform is about ‘breaking’ me.”
