Wouldn’t it be ironic if, after all is said and done, the Middle Eastern countries all slowly but surely evolved into more or less democratic societies by emulating Iraq’s example… just as Bush, Cheney, et al, predicted from the get go?

I’d love to see it because it would be in our interest for that to happen, but also, because it would be such a cosmic joke pulled on the libs and lefties who have for so long predicted the demise of Iraq and scoffed and mocked Bush to the point that they actually believe the rubbish they spew about his “lying us into war” and other stupid comments based on absolutely no evidence whatsoever. Yes, it would be a delicious development.

Actually Mark, that’s not 100% true. Ever read the American’s Creed? It says this country is a democracy IN a republic.

The states are the democratic system, the federal government is the Republic system.

The people of an entire nation cannot dictate what the government does by their popular vote alone. That would lead to either anarchy, or demarchy, depending on the good or ill of the people. And a large democracy in the most dangerous thing on earth if the people want evil.

So we have a series of small democracies, balanced by a large republic. The entire nation as a whole speaks it’s opinion to the republic through the democracy of the states. The republic considers the voice of the states, which are directly influenced by the voice of the people, without actually being dictated by the people itself.

While the democracy and the republic work together (ideally) to govern the nation, they are 2 separate yet equally important aspects on the same system. A rather beautiful and delicate balance (When it works, which it often doesn’t these days because people don’t read their American history anymore. I know of lawyers who’ve never actually read the Constitution.)

Sorry for the American government lecture. I just figured you’d want to know.

If you’all would read the papers and comments riight after WW2 about what we caused to happen in Germany and Japan you’d see the same thing as now about the middle East. Amazingly though it worked. Japan had never known anything but a Dictatorship of absolute Rulers and they are a thriving Democracy/Republic now and Europe had not gone more than 40 years without a major war in over 500 years. The common people of those countries (who of course are not common to themselves) now have a chance to live and enjoy life on their own merits not on who their ancestors where. Sounds worthwhile to me. But of course if you don’t like what is going on with Iraq and the Middle East- don’t participate. Stay home and don’t be part of the solution. The soldiers who go over there are “volunteers”. They joined knowing that they would be sent into harms way. My son is one of them and I will not smear his or others Honor by telling them they can not do what they are willing to do for others. If you have a better idea, please present it. If you don’t think it is “our” problem well I disagree with you. My right as much as yours. America would not exist if non-Americans had not come over and gave their all to help create this Country. Don’t like it well no one say’s you have to stay.

I am impressed, even liberals are getting tired of farleft’s blind and pointless rants.

    Rmleon
Read what LibrarianInTraining says about the democracy and you’ll understand better. Do not listen to the other person, he is a true socialist who wants the government to run his life for him 100%. Obviously he has nothing at all, so he don’t mind living off others. At least this is what I get from him.

    satipera4
“there is nothing sacred about about democracy, a system of government should be judged by its results not by what it pretends to be.”
So then you are saying the United States government, being to oldest working one currently in the world, does not work? I’ll be the first to admit there are flaws, but people are not perfect, so this will happen. We are in a bind right now and the current government wants to change us to socialism (IMO). But I am pretty sure it will not happen. The people and Constitution will not allow it. You probably LOVED Germany 1933-1945 or even Soviet Union 1922 - 1953?

Iran is working on it. This could go down very well indeed.
Say what you want about the middle east, and whether the U.S. is right to be there, but the individual rights of their citizens are almost non-existent, especially women, and it is all starting to change now.

Kurdistan could be the key. Their territory was carved up amongst Iran, Iraq and Turkey after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and World War l. They have demanded their independence for a very long time.

    hank197857

Your point is missed by far too many people.

    LIT

I agree. Each state was designed to be sort of an independent laboratory. Of course, the challenge has been to balance the sovereignty of the states with the authority of the federal government.

    bmwk12ltc

Good point about post-war Germany and Japan. (I, too, honor your son.)

My state is a good example. A dispensary for medical marijuana recently opened in the neighborhood.

In the past, DEA agents would raid such a clinic because it was in violation of federal law.

Now, the feds say they will no longer do so unless the clinic is in violation of both state and federal regulations.

sable, we have not seen any WMDs in Iraq, and satipera, its the fact that people choose their leaders that makes democracy so great, but it is flawed.

satipera4 Re: “People talk about democracy as if it were an ISO standard.”

The ISO Standard may not be familiar to some folks (like Someguy53 - Usually posts Rubbish - or WORSE!)).

For Folks who may want to know more about ISO9000 - see:

    http://www.canadabusiness.ca/servlet/ContentServer?cid=1104766631603&pagename=CBSCAB%2FCBSCWebPage%2FCBSCWebPageTemp&c=CBSC_WebPage

I learned about ISO9000 Standards working in a Cable Manufacturing plant years ago. Made Computer & Medical Cables - ranging from tiny wires that are threaded thru arteries & veins w/camera lens taking pictures to Big Ones like the kind used by Cray Super Computers (back in the late 80’s). ISO Standards are used for Quality - Processing as well as Testing. ;-))

    About WMD’s in Iraq.
Yes they had some, no we did not as much as we thought we would. Even Obama thought they had them. But we DID find some.

    GJ_Jehosaphat
About 13 years ago MDI tried to become ISO. We hired a guy for about 1 year. It was a waste of time and energy. We are UL and CSA and they both are now raising costs and trying to dig through your history to find violations and we’d like to dump them.
Just some boring information you probably could care less about.

I know what U mean. They hired an Engineer with a MBA where I worked to bring the cable plant up to spec & try to get a some coveted Quality Award (not sure which one, cause it was back in the 80’s & didn’t stay there long enough to know if they “Won” it).

Sometimes it felt like more time was being spent in meetings & flow charting instead of producing product (QC dept made Sure what went to customers was Quality Products via visual inspection & digital measuring equipment).

Below is one website found on Googling: Boring, but U want what ever is being used “inside of U” to be as perfect as can be! Think about Quality Control when purchasing from “Cheaper Sources”…. I know I prefer to know ISO Standards are being met!

In the past, U.S. support for Arab autocrats was supposed to serve U.S. national interests and regional stability. In reality, it produced a region increasingly tormented by rampant corruption, extremism and instability.

Bush came to office proposing to turn around this failed policy of accomodation with Middle East dictators. Many argue that this was an idealistic and unrealistic notion. Maybe, maybe not. But Obama is clearly going back to the accomodative approach.

Ironic, since it is Obama who is supposed to be the angelic champion of democracy and human rights. Yet here he is seeking to engage with the murderous leaders of Iran who are shooting down and imprisoning their people as we speak. Some champion.
