    It’s hard to believe an intelligent guy like Obama - and he is extremely intelligent - really believes his massive spending will somehow “all work out.” But I do believe he believes it. If he does, his math is so new it squeaks. Because I have no idea how his “plan” is supposed to work.

    These gargantuan spending programs have never worked in history. Not under Roosevelt, not by the Japanese in the 90s, not by the Romans, not by the Egyptians… not ever. So why does he think it will?

    Is it his goal to spend like crazy to prevent a depression, run up a huge deficit and national debt, and then erase the coming ill effects by raising taxes later, cutting spending later, and “growing our way out of this mess? I suspect that’s his plan. If so, he’s wrong and he and we are going to pay a heavy price down the road.

    And he’s doing all of this without serious quesitoning by the media. It is simply amazing.

    I’m in the middle of a project, but a ‘pbuckland’ asked yesterday about my name ‘slug_queen’ . Interestingly enough, I came by it honestly. The city of Eugene, Oregon, where I lived for several years (main campus of the University of Oregon is there), has an annual festival called the Eugene Celebration. Portland’s Rose Festival has a Rose Queen, and the Eugene Celebration has a Slug Queen. There’s a pageant, held by the Society for the Legitimization of the Ubiquitous Slug, or SLUG for short. You compete with a costume, a talent act, and answering the question out of the hat. It is all very silly and a great deal of fun. I won in 1999, as Carmen Slugana, a Brazilian Banana Slug. Got to ride in the parade, open the Art Show, and did various goodwill ambassador bits throughout the year. My Big Thing was a push for fundraising for the new library. We held a number of events for this, and raised enough cash that they named a room after the Slug Queens’ a first-floor bathroom is the ‘SLUG Queens’ Throne Room’. And we honor our Queens when they step down- once a Queen, always a Queen. The old Queens are, well, Old Queens. After ten years you become a Very Old Queen. I’ll be getting my VOQ pin this year.

    So I use the name I do because I _am_ a SLUG Queen. And it’s generally not already in use. :-)

    FLS: If you knew anything about economics you wouldn’t be on the Left. So where *do* you go for your economic understanding? Marx? Keynes? Marcuse? Book recommendation for non-Lefties: “Economics in One Lesson” by Henry Hazlitt. Despite the glib title, an insightful pro-freedom classic just as applicable to today as when written over 60 years ago.

    Sable: Yes, Obama is highly intelligent, but he and lots of others–Left, Right, and Center–are under the influence of the dominant American school of philosophy called Pragmatism. Pragmatism holds that reality is knowable only by testing it, trying something, and seeing if it works. History is, for the Pragmatist, irrelevant to the present. (Just because TNT exploded in the past doesn’t mean I can’t hammer this block of it today.) In political practice Pragmatism comes down to one of two common forms: Do what feels good (the hippies and Bill Clinton) or do what you can get away with (LBJ, Nixon, Clinton again, Bush II, Obama). Obama does seem to introduce a Pragmatic variant: while trying stuff, just wish hard enough and maybe it will come true.

    WWH: The argument that dictatorships have rights as sovereign nations would endear you to Hitler and Stalin as well as to Sadam. No country that mass-murders its own citizens has any moral claim to sovereignty. (That doesn’t mean the invasion was a good idea, but it happened. Deal with it.)

    Nope, not for Bush either, and as a very early-on Bush
    supporter and a strong conservative I (and a lot of others
    like me) was very disappointed in his economic policies.
    (or lack thereof). But you can’t justify bad behavior by
    comparing it to other bad behavior.

    Barack Obama is extremely intelligent? I guess that’s why he referred recently to the Austrian language, why it took him 20 years to figure out that Jeremiah Wright is a raving bigot, how he remembers campaigning in 57 states, why forming an opinion about late-term abortions was above his pay grade, and why he said that America is one of the world’s largest Moslem countries when it’s really the 48th largest.

    Oh yes, this guy’s a real genius.

    Bush was wrong on joining the Dems on bigger government, illegal immigration and bailout money to banks. Obama is doing those things too, but by a factor of ten!

    It’s funny how the Dems bashed Bush on so many things, but Obama is doing many of the same things and they swoon and proclaim their god-king to be a genius!

    Yes folks, we have a President who thinks he can stimulate the economy by printing more “money,” raising your taxes, and spending our grand children’s inheritance—all to win the votes of illegal immigrants, dead people, and Democrats.
    Furthermore, he can’t prove he was born in America. According to Obama’s Kenyan (paternal) grandmother, as well as his half-brother and half-sister, Barack Hussein Obama was born in Kenya, not in Hawaii as he claims. Before his inauguration, his grandmother bragged that her grandson was about to be President of the United States and is so proud because she was present during his birth in Kenya, in the delivery room. This, according to several news sites and Pennsylvania attorney Philip J. Berg who is a life long democrat himself. Berg is the former Deputy Attorney General of Pennsylvania.

    Everything Obama, Pelosi and the rest of the far left do is tied together- to control every aspect of our lives.

    They are placing fees on cattle ranchers, in the name of reducing Global Warming, but in reality, they are working to FORCE us to be good little vegans- they won’t outlaw meat, dairy, etc., just step by step make it too expensive for the average person to afford.

    They won’t outlaw vehicles that we want, they’ll just apply fees and taxes to what they consider to be too large of vehicles to make sure we all drive little tin can death traps.

    They won’t force us into Government Controlled Health Care- Obama says we can choose to keep our doctors- but they are going to tax the health care we are getting and then add more fees, until we can’t afford to keep ours and will have to join theirs.

    You can go down the list of our freedoms and see that step by step they will be taxing, feeing and regulating us into giving up all our freedoms, to be taken into the comforting bossom of the great Nanny State where they will take care of us, though at the price of telling us what to do, where we can go, how we live!

    The left has the ultimate goal of controlling the lives of we “ignorant peons” as they think that they know better how we should live our lives!

    There is nothing more disgusting than a liberal!

    • Massive spending did indeed work for Roosevelt, both as the New Deal and as the massive military spending of WWII; not only did it get us out of the Great Depression, it heralded a near-fifty year period of economic stability for the US. It ended when Ronald Reagan and the Friedmanites decided they wanted to “fix” things.


    • John Meynard Keynes is one of the forgotten geniuses of the 20th Century. The ones who most smear him tend to be ones who least understand him, or his ideas.


    • Cattle do indeed generate massive amounts of methane. It’s only common sense to try to control their numbers.


    • Big cars aren’t a freedom, they’re a privilege.
