Oh come now Carl, hugs are quite pleasant. Just had a huge discussion on that over at BT.

Now now, just because the world likes soccer doesn’t mean i have to, although it is fun to play.

Your take on football is very perverse, but I would have expected this. I personally dislike all “popular” sports. But if you would insult a sport you should pick on wrestling.

satipera … seems Carl Moore is not familiar with the history of Liverpool FC? Perhaps he was referring to soccer in the Serie A and not the Premiership?

In any case, this ‘toon is reinforcing the most absurdly stupid stereotypes, so I’ll change topic: In a perfect world, Man U holds form and outs Arsenal in the Champions, but falls to Barca in the final; then, the combo of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres carry the Reds to an upset in the Premier.

I think Carl needs a hug. And then let him get on a field and try to stop a soccer ball with his head - lets see how he “feels” then. He’s not conservative - he’s just a relic.

I believe if Carl was a football player that a soccer ball on the head would not be as bad as you’d expect it to be.
    satipera
You like Barca cause it is owned by the fans? SHOCKING! I figured you’d like it more if it were government owned.

Good Gawd. Markymark Trailerpark is so witty he could link the (typo’ed) ‘proabortion’ meme with, say, the Cookie Monster.

You must be a real treat for the guy sitting over at the next barstool.

In football it takes 30 mins to play for 4 mins. In soccer, those guys run around for 90 mins without having a lot to show for results.

But well, both sports are tough and require intense discipline. In general, I believe a soccer player could transform into a football player - but not the other way round. Doesn’t mean a whole lot, but just thought I’d throw it out.

Football is necessarily a contact sport though and severely shortens a player’s effective career. Not so in soccer. Imagine a 300 pound monster throwing his body weight onto another person (with malice). Getting hit by a car might be easier on the body. So yes, football is tougher, but soccer is harder.

Last, but not the least, go dolphins, go red devils.

You get all that because he is very strongly anti-abortion? I am equally anti-abortion and I don’t want women to have less rights. In fact, my wife is equally as anti-abortion as I am. She doesn’t fear women or she does not want them to be a 2nd class citizen. Abortion should not be the right of the woman. Because when you have an abortion you are removing the rights of the innocent child. I will say Mark is alot less annoying by constantly saying his view on abortion. Then farleftside or wndrwrthg insulting Bush in every other post. Liberals are OK with abortion, but hate when we kill terrorist. Nice!

    satipera says:
    What he actually said was
“someone who understands justice is not just about some abstract legal theory, but about how laws affect Americans’ daily lives.”

And what is it supposed to mean? When did justice become an abstract legal theory? I thought justice is all about application and practicality.

What Obama said is he doesn’t give a BLEEP what the Constitution says, he wants them to rule on the European standards.

    To all:
    Have a GREAT weekend!

attyush … I think you are right in saying that legal cases determined by the Supreme Court should be about application and practicality, but I think we’d differ on how we are using those terms.

If the Supreme Court is intended to be an arbiter of constitutionality, then the Court is not necessarily deciding the correctness or incorrectness of a particular set of facts, but rather weighs the implications of whether a ruling is upheld or not.

Application and practicality, then, have everything to do with a SC decision. For example, if decision X is affirmed, what implication does it have on the law of the land and how the law is instituted?

That said, I’d like to think that the rest of Obama’s criteria for selecting a justice (“empathy for …”) are meant to say that a justice should consider all the implications of a ruling, and that sometimes the implications of a law may unintentionally and unfairly impact one group more than another. I think he is saying that a justice should be able to recognize any potential inherent unfairness in a law.

IMO – law should be as equal as possible and a law should not stand if it unfairly gives rights to some but not all. One small example is in the debate on whether women should be granted maternity leave during pregnancy; there is an argument made by some that giving leave to women but not men grants rights to women (in this case) that do not apply to men. IMO … if that ever came before the Court, I would hope they would find that either leave is given to both men and women or to neither (and the implication is equality of men and women in the eyes of the law).

    satipera:
1949 was a landmark year in the USA. In a case TERMINIELLO V. CITY OF CHICAGO, the supreme court reversed the trial courts decision by granting Terminiello the freedom of speech (thereby upholding first amendment), even though Terminiello had unpleasant things to say.

I would hate to see justices who are in “touch with experiences of average citizens”. That is why we have a trial by jury. The jury is aware of the surroundings. The supreme court needs to stay above our petty political posturing. Sadly, that has not always been the case, but I am also proud that most often than not, the Supreme Court has delivered verdicts which renew my faith in the judiciary.

  20. attyush

    attyush said, 6 months ago

    BirishB:
Spot on. And your words reminded me of John Marshall, who helped Supreme Court develop its power and importance. From time to time, we had these people challenge the laws, amendments and politicization of the constitution and I hope that they continue to do the same.

[Edit]: Changed “men” to “people”. Political correctness is the order of the day :)

    satipera:
I mean it is quite irrelevant given the responsibilities they have. On the contrary, this will have an impact on their decision making abilities. Now we wouldn’t want that, would we?

So I want my justices to be selected based on their understanding of the law and constitution, not on average citizen’s concerns. And once elected/selected, I would expect them to scrutinize all laws passed by congress, all cases and judge with their understanding of the law, not by their compassion for average citizens.

As I said earlier, that’s why we have jury trials…

Well, I’m sure Obama’s picks will find, through their empathy for their fellow leftists, that any conservative saying anything that “hurts the feelings” of leftists is engaging in “hate speech” and can be thrown in prison for life!

I am not so sure. Supreme court justices have a knack to surprise people, even their appointers.

MatthewJB, thanks for your answer this morning. I didn’t think you were but everyone out here in the corn country is upset by our courts ruling lately on gay marriage. It doesn’t bother me though, of all things to worry about, why that. On the abortion issue I look at as a matter of self defense for a women. If her life is in danger it’s self defense. Just as I might be justified in killing someone that threatened my life. But I wouldn’t be justified in killing if my life weren’t in danger. It’s a tough thing no matter how you look at it, for sure. It’s just my opinion, I don’t mean to judge anyone.

I didn’t notice any women involved in this discussion of abortion and womens’ rights,( not unusual) and so I will add my little 2 cents, even tho I am almost asleep and barely can even read this one comic, after work today. (With lots of kids.)
I may have said this here before, I think I have premature Alzhiemers’ !

Anyhoo- I am a woman. I have 3 babies. I had sex to have them, with my full consent. That being said, I already had my “choice.” I chose to allow semen in my body, which created a child. Had I not wanted a child, I should have said: NO! I didn’t ! So, I have great kids, all in their 30’s! I did have freedom of choice, and so does anyone who is not raped or unable to refuse for whatever reason. If I was going to die while having my child, then another set of choices have to be made, by both myself and my husband. But, taking our tax dollars, and providing abortions as a means of birth control, is not a good choice. Good night everybody!

RogOregon, I’m really sorry about whatever it was that happened in your life to make you such an angry and spiteful person. Do other people on these pages sometimes get insulting? Yes. But they occasionally get there. You seem to live there. I don’t mean to cast aspersions here. I’m just trying to encourage reflection. Think about it a little. Can’t you imagine a forum where people disagree with one another but do so respectfully? Those forums really do exist. And we can try to make this one more civil. But it will take all of us restraining our rage a little. Please don’t give me the “Well, other people are mean, too” stuff. Yeah, they are. But that doesn’t excuse you or anyone else being so rude.
