For debate: Un-employment is up to the highest it has been since 1983. So where does that leave us after 25 years of out-sourcing and closing down manufacturing?
Warthog, don’t be shy - tell us how you really feel.

See, now this one actually makes sense, because reganomics have proven to be a failure.

And all Obama wants to do is to take the richest back to the tax level they had under Clinton, and we all know how much that economy sucked…

    Corporate taxes are fracked.

Yes we have the highest on the books.

But we also have by far the most loopholes. So many in fact that over half of all American corporations pay NO taxes, and over 70 percent of foreign corporations in the US pay NO taxes. (and I’m not talking about how companies pass taxes on to consumers.)

It’s too easy to gloss over those facts when asking for more tax breaks for the rich.

And who gets hurt in the mean time? The small businesses who can’t make the loopholes. (Of course you also don’t say that under the stimulus plan small businesses who make less than $250,000 a year will pay less in taxes, because ya know, like over 90% DON’T make that much.)

Both sides lie so much about our tax code it makes me sick. The worst part is that it is so complicated no normal person even tries to understand it.

But as someone who works for John Deere’s and knows the inner workings of why and how we ship jobs overseas i will tell you it has almost nothing to do with taxes, and everything to do with employee wages, and work environment standards. And we are paying for it, the Mexico plants are extremely unreliable and cost us tons in delays.

And if you want to argue that American workers should take the cut and compete with Mexicans, then either go read up on the 1880’s or simply ask an illegal immigrant why he came over here.

I began working as an Engineer during Eisenhower and retired during Clinton. During that career, my Federal income tax ranged from 18% to 22% of gross income, except under Reagan it reached 23%. (Politically, I was a Goldwater campaign worker, Reagan Republican, but finally under the last Bush became a Jim Jeffords Independent.) What did Reagan’s taxes and ‘Star Wars’ buy America? They bluffed the Soviet Union out of the Cold War pot. British Prime Ministers and German Presidents liked both Reagan and Obama, and consequently America. Bush #43 drove his stake into the heart of Uncle Sam - maybe it produced only a superficial wound which Obama can heal.

    revfds,

Corporations don’t pay taxes, corporations collect taxes. People - or should I say liberals -somehow believe that by raising corporate taxes, the rich CEOs and middle managers have to take out their check books and write a check for the taxes. No, the people who pay corporate taxes are you and I, the people who buy the goods and sevices provided by those “evil” corporations. Taxes are a cost that is reflected in the price of those goods and services. The corporation simply acts as a middleman between their customers and the IRS. Raise corporate taxes and you raise the cost of living for all of us. The CEOs aren’t financially hurt at all except that corporate taxes make their business less competitive in the world, which, again, hurts all of us.

So the next time you hear someone talk about raising corporate taxes in order to sock it to those “rich corporate fat cats,” be aware that you’re talking to an idiot.

Ah yes, Reaganomics. The brainchild of Paul Volker who was appointed as Fed Chairman by Jimmy Carter in 1979 and reappointed in 1981 by Ronald Reagan.
    http://tinyurl.com/2jn2oy

For those who saw Reaganomics, you’ll love the sequel. Mr. Volker is back as advisor to President Obama.

Rog - you are so right about the tax loopholes.

Sablebrush - Of course Business passes along any overhead or penalties to the consumer, why can’t people see this?

[So the next time you hear someone talk about raising corporate taxes in order to sock it to those “rich corporate fat cats,” be aware that you’re talking to an idiot.] This is SO true.

Funny, we never hear that the “New Deal” is dead. Why is it when a politician runs on a conservative platform they usually win? If Sarah Palin is so un-qualified, why is the “far-left” trying to destroy her? Look at the states with the greatest fiscal problems and you will see they have one thing in common. The legisatures have been runned by liberals.

Can anybody tell me how long it takes a policy to take effect on the economy. I have heard everything from six months to four years?

As for today’s strip Reagan and his polcies did do some good. A lot. I liked him a lot but it is time to pay things off not to spend more. The funny thing is that some of the people who like President Obama pull out old Reaganomic arguments to justify his (Obama) spending. I am afraid that will come back to bite them.

I already mentioned that corporations pass taxes on to consumers. Thanks for trying to start a fight when i was agreeing with you. I would still agree with having some taxes on corporations, such as a tax on the phone companies to pay for terrorist spying. Or tax on oil & gas to invest in renewables or fund roads.

    satipera,
To reference the failure of reganonimcs all you have to do it look out the window.

I find it funny that the majority of states that take in the most federal money, pay the least in taxes, and tend to be red. http://www.taxfoundation.org/research/show/266.html#fedspendpertaxesbystate-20071009
Seems that the last 30 years have of conservative rule and ideology haven’t really helped the states lift themselves up by their boot straps.

I encourage all of you who are outraged by the current administration to move to SC and enjoy the enlightened attitude and efficiencies that have resulted from a Republican dominated state (/snark)

    RobOregon says, from yesterday;

Dypak, LOL! Liberals on here constantly bash America, Christians and conservatives.
—Hrmm, I’m a liberal? Don’t think so. I’ve been a registered republican for 30 years. I just got sick of their frauds, deceptions and outright lies. And I’m also guilty of being a Christian, I’m not bashing anyone one there either.

    Rob says:
They have no problem stereotyping, saying the absolute nastiest things, etc., but then they turn around and try to act like they are so tolerant and sophisticated. So, your outrage at my calling the French “Frogs” is hard to understand when your side drips with venom far worse! But of course, there is a certain self-righteousness to the left that seems to think that those they disagree with are so wrong that it’s fine to say anything.
—–If you think it’s ok to group people as one and call them names that’s your business I guess. But don’t try to pretend it isn’t justifiable just because other people do it. I don’t have a side. My side is America. If a liberal or a conservative is able to unscrew this mess I’m in I am all for him. Right now I think the Democrat we have is worlds better than the any of the Republicans they offered us.

    Rob says:
Again, liberals have a double standard that is beyond all belief.
—All the so called Liberals and Conservatives are the ones with double, triple and probably even quadruple standards are the ones I can’t believe. Anyone who will not consider, even for a minute, whether or not someone from the other party may be right is the entire root of our political problem. When Pres. George Washington left office he warned us against political parties. He was concerned that our representatives would vote for what is the best interest of the party, rather than the United States of America. Can you at least consider that this is exactly the situation going on at this very moment in history? My Senator in Congress, Mitch McConnell, is so wrapped up in party politics he should be tried for treason. He does not give a bleeep about the US, the Commonwealth of Kentucky or his constituents. All he cares about is his place in the party. Now there is the heart of a true socialist or fascist, take your pick.

    Rob says;
I saw some liberal on the news saying how great it was that Obama was basically saying America was to blame for everything, that it would get the good will of Europe- but then they were asked what does that get us? Do they help out more in Afghanistan where Obama is sending tens of thousands of troops from Iraq- those troops that he said he’d be bringing home, thus saving tons of money which was going to help pay for his programs (the liberal media fails to question him on that- how sending them to Afghanistan costs at least the same as keeping them in Iraq, so how does that save money as he said over and over during the campaign.) No, the lib said, they aren’t likely to help there. They were asked other things that Europe could help us on, and they said again, no. So, basically we’ll have Europe’s good will, just not their cooperation on anything!
—-I might be wrong RobOregon but I’m betting you’ve never been in the military. If you had you’d understand why it is cheaper to have say, 100,000 troops in one place rather than 50,000 in two places. And the second reason is because when it comes to our troops we have to throw the checkbook out. I don’t intend to argue the rightness or wrongness of Iraq or Afghanistan. But as long as we have troops deployed it is our moral obligation to spend whatever it takes for them to do their jobs and come home safely.

    Rob says;
But hey, America is so evil, it has done so much bad in this world and no good, right? And those Europeans, they are so sophisticated and intelligent and they do things so perfectly over there. We Americans should be so ashamed of ourselves. And I’m always hearing from Europeans online about how all Americans are very fat, and other stereotypical garbage, and hey, those Europeans know it all so it must be true!
—Come on Robbie, please don’t whine. America is a great place, the best I’ve ever seen. And I’ve been all over the world. We’ve done some great things and I am proud of America. But that doesn’t mean that we can ignore the truly evil things that we’ve done in the past and continue to do to this day. If we did that we’d be like the folks who defend the wife beater. Hey, he pays his bills on time and look! What a nice house he gives her to live in. And he’s in Church every Sunday. It’s a shame be beats her, but he’s still a swell guy. Rob, sometimes the United States is the Stanley Kowalski of the world. We think that it’s ok to act like a bunch of idiots, because hey, we’re such great folks. No, we are childish and immature. And we’re going to be like that until our leaders, BOTH liberals and conservatives, can finally admit it. Acknowledging that you have a problem is the first step on the road to recovery.

It’s not taxes that killed Reaganomics, but reality. Government is a tool, and as a tool, it can do both good and evil. Some of the good can only be done by government (see long-term environmental protection, especially water run off). Reagan was a fool when he said government was the problem.

Thanks. Was afraid I sounded arrogant and preachy. I truly believe that everyone who posts here genuinely cares about our nations future. The problem is we are all so brainwashed and controlled by the media and our politicians that we have no idea how to express our own thoughts and concerns so all we do is echo what we’ve heard others say. Even though I rarely agree with Carl Moores depiction of events I at least respect that he is able to express his own views and can get people talking. I envy him his ability to reach a large number of people. As long as we can all talk and listen to each other there is hope for us yet.

Hearing both sides bicker all the time makes me think of the Simpsons, when Lionel Hutz says, “Imagine a world without lawyers.” In his head is a picture of everyone on the planet dancing and singing under a rainbow, and Mr. Hutz shudders. I think the same could be said for politicians. What we need is a leader. Let’s see if Obama can, if he can’t, we can vote in someone else. That is the beauty of democracy.

Reaganomics was a failure? Really? I seem to remember the ’70s as being a time of “stagflation” - high inflation rates and a stagnant economy at the same time. Reagan came in ‘81 and cut income taxes big time, trimmed back on regulation, promoted free trade, cut the capital gains rate, and lowered corporate taxes. The result - an end to Jimmy Carter’s and the Democrats’ stagflation of the ’70s and the boom years of the ’80s. Reaganomics was a huge success, not a failure and is one of the reasons (the other being his playing a major role in the ending of the cold war) Reagan is now considered one of our best presidents, only one level below Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt.

  24. farren

    farrenGenius_badge said, 7 months ago

The primary legacy of the Reagan administration is its abilty to be used to highlight the “Big Lie” technique - say something loud enough and long enough, and the gullible will start to believe it. Like the idea that Reagan was a “Great” president. That’s only supportable if the gullible remain gullible. I make no predictions on that score. Some will, you betcha, and they’ll remain loud and liars for years to come. The thing that’s saddest, as evidenced by the comments here, is that the less intelligent will continue to believe them.

Gonna take some mighty strong juju to kill Voodoo Economics (George H.W. Bush)! Back in 1990, one sixth of the budget went towards servicing the federal debt. And what happened to that surplus we had in 2000? People talk about “tax and spend liberals”, but what about the “borrow and spend” conservatives? What happens when foreign governments stop buying our IOUs, or demand higher interest rates? Also, everyone, keep in mind that it takes some time for the economy to rebound. Even Reagan’s administration had some rough spots. We can all judge the results in 2012.

  26. sablebrush5

    sablebrush5 said, 7 months ago

Reagan is easily one of our more outstanding presidents. “Great” is too strong a word, but one of the best, yes, he is.

Most libs consider Clinton to have been one of our best (a laughable notion), yet even Obama pointed out that Reagan’s presidency was much more significant than Clinton’s (which ticked ol’ Bubba off no end because he knew Obama was correct.)

Reagans’s stock continues to go up with each passing year. His presidency marked a tectonic conservative shift away from Roosevelt’s big-government New Deal approach which prevailed from ‘33 all the way through Jimmy Carter’s presidency and is now coming back into vogue with the Obama presidency. Reagan’s “government isn’t the solution, government is the problem” approach combined with his crucial role in the ending of the Cold War mark him as a top-tier President.

Liberals hate the very thought of such a notion, I know, because Reagan was not an intellectual or an academic type but a common-sense guy with good instincts a la Truman, two unpretentious guys with good judgement that paid off in making this a country a more prosperous, more secure, place and both are considered top-level presidents today and rightfully so.

    RobOregon,
Settle down cowpoke, don’t let your dander git up. I really don’t care what you call me, as long as you listen. This old hypocrite probably just didnt explain himself very well and got you all confused and upset. Sorry about that.
–You’re still calling me a liberal. See, you really don’t understand what I’m trying to say. I think people that call themselves liberals and conservatives are the problem. They want their side to win, not the American people. They are ALL full of the stuff my cat leaves in the litter-box. The proof is that there is no basic difference between the two sides. For every issue I can show you liberals and conservatives on both sides of it. They really don’t care. They just want to convince you and every other b00b out there to follow along blindly.

I’ve got no idea what in the world you’re talking about Obama increasing the cost of military care. I’m Army retired, my father is, my brother in law is still on active duty with over 20 years, my son is active duty. The ONLY reason I’m explaining is to show I know what I’m talking about. There is no increase. I appreciate your anger over the issue though. I sure hope you actually do something about it other than post here.

You’ve got me lost in that long tirade about European crimes. What’s that got to do with us? We go around the world, acting like punks. So it’s ok though, because everyone else does it? See RobO, I expect more of us than apparently you do. I expect our nation to do the right thing, to behave itself and follow the rules we demand others follow. I know what we are capable of and we don’t even come close. We act like criminals and thugs and expect other nations to kiss our collective buttocks and thank us for it. I want to be better that other countries because we behave better, not because we can nuke ‘em all and let Allah sort it out.

Who you should be mad at is your leaders. Demand that they live up to their responsibilities and duties and vote your conscience. Don’t start arguments with someone who agrees that we’re in a world of hurt and thinks we need to work together to fix this FUBAR situation we’re in.
