This idea that kids are so psychologically fragile that they can’t accept the reality of winners and losers is simply ridiculous. How this kind of thinking ever got started is a testament to the stupidity of political correctness and its enablers - therapists, “progressives” and liberal teachers who think they’re being “compassionate” and “sensitive” when, in fact, they’re just being obtuse.
wndrwrthg, that’s absolutely right. The no winners/losers thing is to enable the parents and teachers to feel good about themselves. They can feel “compassionate” and “caring” while the kids are laughing their you-know-whats off behind their backs. Liberals don’t care about doing good, they just want to feel good.
i must be a terrible liberal, i agree with moore and all the people here i usually disagree with. i’m not sure it’s compassion it’s teaching, or the sense that even if you lose you get something. i think that just teaches the sense of entitlement that has gotten so many in trouble. hmmm..must ponder this for awhile, be back soon
I believe the “no losers” trophies are for the parents. The kids know who won and who lost.
I believe you are absolutely right wndrwrthg; the parents must have something to make themselves feel good about the actually childraisng dynamics that are being ignored while they are too busy at their high paying professions so they can feed their BMWs and Land rovers which they use to haul the kids to these “sporting” events. (this is a liberal/conservative free comment, just an overview of contemporary American life-style)
A school-teacher friend of mine says kids at her school are not allowed to say how easy a test was because it might hurt the feelings of children who found it hard.
They are also not allowed to tell the old “How to eat an elephant -one bite at a time” joke because of a zero-tolerance policy for violence.
In the head-on collision between run-away emotion and reality, my money is on reality.
Like it or not Americans are goal oriented. In martial arts in the begining there were no colour belts. Then in order to give the students something to strive for the colours of white, green, brown, and finally black were introduced. Then to furture improve the belts were marked with a stripe. Finally when instruction was being introduced in the West some instructors realize by assigning a colour to each level the students seemed to work harder towars a goal. Competition helps forge one’s character.
I consider myself a Big-L Liberal, and I believe this cartoon is hitting the nail perfectly on the head. There is a big difference between stopping bullying and meanness of spirit in behavior and the idea of rewarding EVERYONE (even if the reward is unearned) so that nobody’s feelings are hurt. The irony of trying to overprotect children is that having their feelings hurt is often what teaches them to BE compassionate and altruistic… Kids that are always pampered and “protected” are the ones that grow up to be spoiled brats or kill their parents when they’re told to do something they don’t want to do when they’re 15-yrs-old. I don’t think this sort of modern-day silliness is a liberal-vs-conservative philosophy.
To put this in terms, proabortion, Socialist traitor liberals can understand… instead of having Barack Obama sworn in Jan. 20th.. we should have Obama, McCain, Biden, Huckabee, Nader, Hillary, Romney, Duncan, Richardson, Paul and some other candidates take the oath. After all they ran for president. Not fair to have a loser.
That’s really a problem in America. Failure isn’t the worst thing. It motivates people to try to do better the next time. It gives them goals.
But trying to explain that to proabortion DEMS is impossible.. just like trying to explain to them that abortion stops a beating heart. They DON’T GET IT.
Mark, I must call you on this. Did you not read how many people on the board agree with the cartoonist today? I agree with him, too. Shame on you for not reading what your fellow posters wrote today.
mark says failure isn’t the worst thing. i guess this what the idiot child kept thinking.11 more days and your gone georgie boy. thank you pres.elect oboma for being there for us.
farleftside, please learn the difference between the Congressional Medal of Honor, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It may not matter to you, but there is a marked difference.
Mark Trail says, Failure isn’t the worst thing. It motivates people to try to do better nest time.
Now, while I can do without all the references to pro-abortionists, what he says is absolutely right. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. Many successful entrepreneurs have a few failed businesses under their belts. I know artists that couldn’t navigate to the corner store, athletes that can’t add a simple column of numbers…it’s been said that Einstein had trouble tying his shoe laces (although I don’t know - that might be an urban myth). Competition does sharpen our ambitions. And I think it’s good for everyone to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses.
What on earth will the U.S.A. be like in a few years?
With no inspiration to achieve there will be no achievements at all.
We will be a third world nation with nothing to look forward to except some other country telling us to keep doing what we are doing.
NOTHING AT ALL!!!!! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!
Funny how that spoils to the victor rhetoric went out of currency with Republicans after the ‘06 and ‘08 elections. This guy, Carl Moore, never won anything other than the Christopher Hitchens Neurasthenic Neocon Whiner and Strawman Creator Award.
If your an alleged cartoonist, do you bludgeon obvious shibboleths over atrocious ‘artwork’? Or do you make the point to which you’re entitled with whatever minuscule amount of wit your shriveled heart possesses?
I’m thinking of the future when our children get into the real world and don’t really have an idea of what competition is. If the lazy slob next to you gets the same credit for doing far less, what would be the point in trying to do your best?
State of the Union is the result of a self-professed "fallen liberal’s" journey from radical socialism to conversative cartooning. Combining startling caricatures with a sly sense of humor and a sharp eye for satire, this innovative new strip will be sure to tickle your funnybone while making you think.

I know that the last time I went in for a job interview they hired all 30 of us to fill the one position they had available.
