    To bradbochte (from yesterday)

“A company I worked for moved their call center to Canada” Have you heard of NAFTA? Did they leave it there when the $ was at par? Did Canada refarm it out to India where most of ours are located? As for the health insurance issue, Canada’s medical system is almost bankrupt. In our town there are huge lineups around the block trying to get on the waiting list to be accepted as a patient whenever a new doctor is announced. Many people do not have a family doctor and are unable to find one. Waiting times for surgery and even MRI’s take months. I laugh whenever I hear Americans drooling over Canada’s healthcare system.

Much of the blame for New Orleans rested on the shoulders of the governor who did not want the Feds moving in. In Canada the provinces do not have anywhere near the autonomy that the individual states have in the U.S. For example, the federal government runs the federal elections unlike the U.S. system where every state runs its own show.
Union demands have not helped industries like the auto industry. Years ago, they almost crippled the railroads. Sports unions wield tremendous power over their sector. But fear not, the bubble will burst someday.
There are many opinions about the war efforts, but there have been no further attacks on the U.S. and stability is occuring in Iraq, but could be undermined by a foolish early withdrawal. WWII was not won in a day, (Canada and Britain were involved for six years), and occupation after the war lasted for many years, but hasty decisions and alliances still led to the partition of Europe and the cold war.

As for your other points, what was the democratic controlled congress doing if such atrocious acts have been taking place? Oh, I know, they were campaigning.

    pbuckland,

The main job of FEMA is to work with the local government regarding disasters.
Clinton’s FEMA director took a bus out to Illinois to get first hand knowledge of flood when he was a director of FEMA
The mayor and governor were incompetent. I said nothing to defend them but there is a reason FEMA exists and it failed to do its job when Katrina struck
One reason Clinton won in 1992 was because of the poor response to Hurricane Andrew in Florida by Bush I
I guess it runs in the family.

The Democrats did not take control of Congress until 2007. Katrina hit in 2005. For the first 6 years of his presidency Bush had a rubber stamp Congress

The reason American auto industries are hurting is because they have had plants in the US longer than the Japanese or the Germans, therefore they have more retirees who collect health benefits and pensions
You may consider it unreasonable that an autoworker may expect a pension and medical care after working 40 years on an assembly line; I don’t.

The first attack on the WTC took place in February of 1993.
The next attack did not take place until 8.5 years later
    Tulsa was domestic terrorism
In that time period several terrorist plots were foiled including a plot to hijack and crash planes over the Pacific and the Millennium plot in Seattle.
The mastermind of the first WTC plot, Remzi Yusuf, was captured an brought to justice.
You cannot compare WWII to Iraq.
All the resource available were put forward in that war. Every nation had a draft. US does not have a draft now and it has not put all its resources toward this war.
What resources are being used in Iraq are not available in Afghanistan and the enemy is mobile
WW II ended when the Allies entered Berlin and the Emperor of Japan surrendered.
This is not that kind of war
We have to be careful and accurate when it comes to using the military
The problems that exist in Iraq existed long before Saddam came to power and will exist generations from now
Is it the responsibility of American men and women to babysit Iraq?

Yes, the person hired to clean up the mess is allowed to blame the person who made the mess if the mess is still there halfway into the job of cleaning up the mess. What’s your point?

Please reread my original post. I did not state that Bush was the greatest, nor did I mention anything about the job that Clinton did. My primary beef is that the American people and the press have vilified Bush far more than was warranted. Many problems do exist, but they are the result of a multitude of factors. Certainly, union workers have great health and retirement benefits, but there are a lot of other workers who do not. Powerful unions gained these benefits, but the American economy is now paying the cost, especially with the aging population. Katrina was devastating, and FEMA was not as effective as it should be, but it was up to the governor to declare a state of emergency which she refused to do for political reasons. Bush did what he could, but he did not cause the hurricane, nor did he have anything to do with building New Orleans below sea level or maintaining the levees. I drew the parallel between Iraq and WWII, to illustrate that peace does not come about overnight. The surrender of Japan and Germany did not mean that the troops were all immediately sent home. Occupation and rebuilding took years.

No matter what action any official takes on any issue, there will always be dissent between his supporters and his detractors. There is no right or wrong in a democracy, but just opinions. Let George Bush leave office with the dignity he and the office deserve, and quit blaming one man for all the world’s problems. It is far more intricate than that. Every president inherits the problems that are left over from prior administrations. Let Obama get on with the job of governing, and let Bush write his memoirs if he so chooses. He and his wife brought a sense of dignity to the office that was long overdue.

No person, not even POTUS, has control over all matters, but you cannot ignore the shear arrogance and at the end of the day incompetence that marked this presidency.
You say your primary beef is the the American people and press have vilified George W Bush but you have no problem in vilifying the Democrats and Unions.
In your post of 12/2 you state he was dealing with a democratic congress for the last term
He was only dealing with a Democratic Congress for less than 2 years of his presidency
The election of the Democrats in 2006 was directly due to the people’s dissatisfaction with Bush
I agree with you that the governor and mayor of New Orleans handled the Katrina situation badly.
I still can’t believe the mayor was re-elected. If the mayor of NYC handled something that badly, he would be forced to move to NJ

It still does not excuse the fact that an unqualified person was put in charge of FEMA.
Michael Brown’s main qualification was that he was the law school roommate of his predecessor.

You blame the unions for the problem of the automakers but the unions were willing to to renegotiate their contracts back in 2005 to help the automakers and their willing to do it now.
Technology played the biggest role in the decline of the railroads.

I did not praise the Canadian health system in my post on 12/2 but it did make it easier for the company I worked for to move their call center from the US to Canada
Ask anyone who has lost a job in the US; after the loss of income the biggest concern is the loss of health benefits.

The defenders of George W Bush are very quick to credit him with whatever successes the US has experienced in the past 7+ years but claim he is being unfairly persecuted if anyone criticizes this President.

President Clinton may have had his weaknesses but Bush did not bring dignity to the office.
What dignity is their when the President has violated some of the basic Constitutional principles of this country?

The fact is he is leaving office with the US in far worst shape than when he entered the office.
We can let history decide how much is his responsibility but I am happy to see him go and wish him nothing but the best as he starts the next chapter of his life

    Mark,
I worry about you. Your delusions are truly frightening.
The Democrats would not have picked more than 50 House seats and 12 Senate seats in the last 2 elections if Bush had done a good job
Bush has the lowest approval ratings of any President since Nixon
Obama did not win only because pro-abortion Socialist Liberals(your words) voted for him.
Do you have so much contempt for 65% to 76% of your fellow Americans that disapprove of Bush’s handling of the job that you believe they do not have a legitimate reason for their opinion?
