I’ve often wondered if truly warlike, jingoistic races like the Klingons could survive to achieve space travel… instead of blowing themselves up once they develop nuclear weapons.

To ants, we probably look like a warlike, jingoistic race, and that’s just from what many children do to them. Imagine a developmentally and technologically superior race…a VASTLY superior race. Would we be ants to them, or worse yet, Cattle? Bear in mind Professor Hawking’s warning: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8642558.stm

We ARE a warlike, jingoistic species. A vastly superior race would just observe and take notes.

Depends on the species. They may also be superior at war or at least assimilation of worlds and it wouldn’t be with warships. Probably an intelligent nano-cybervirus that infects all things and rewrites their DNA to match the invaders.

A bit late for that – we are now inside an expanding, 90+light-year diameter bubble of radio transmissions that potentially advertises “we are here” to intelligent life around any of the hundreds of stars within that bubble of human radio noise.

According to my recollection of Star Trek lore, the Klingon’s didn’t develop warp drive. Rather they captured it from some other aliens who landed on their planet.
