YOLO is a commonly used abbreviation for “You Only Live Once”. Cats (particularly cartoon cats) are supposed to have nine lives. Hence the “9” instead of the “O”.

Dave intended it to look like an “O” made into a “9” — otherwise the numeral would have stylistically been more in synch with the other letters.
