    Telling the waves to not cover your stick is irrational, however, moving the stick to above the reach of the wave is an excellent solution.

    Not a stick—birdie drew a line in the sand. Like a chip on your shoulder, it’s asking for a fight. If the other guy crosses the line (or knocks the chip off), the fight is on! Which is where those two sayings come from btw. However, Birdie, like King Canute, knows he can’t really fight the sea, so he just moves the line until he feels victorious.
