One fateful day two weeks ago i went for a walk and ended up in an art gallery on Douglaas street that also sells art supplies on the side. I bought a set of five pens ot different sizes to ink my cartoon instead of using just one pen that has the advantages of being cheap and easy to find….

Look at the contours of the speech bubbles on this one? Thicker than usual, huh? New pens at work!

It’s that time of the year in Acadia when the tourist have left, but with the start of the teaching year at the university of Moncton, another kind of travelling bird starts to show up; the French intellectual (and the Quebec intellectual, and the french-arab intellectual, and the french-speaking african intellectual). It’s getting pretty interesting…

The “charter of Quebec values”, another piece of french-canadian insecurrity made to define what it is to be a Quebecker, is being talked about in the news…yeah, french-canadians can be paranoid about their culture and history, they say it has to do with being a mere eight million french-canadians (not all in Quebec), surrounded by over 300 million english-speaking north-americans but there is another reason…

Think of everything you think about when you think about France, now picture reading their books as ZE example of what you should be and how you should speak, what you should think. Those people gave the World Versailles, the French-Revolution, the Expressionists, Moliere, the French Resistance, Napoleon, a colonial empire and all we have to answer to it is Celine Dion and a hockey team,

Sorry but not sorry, but we’re french-speaking canadians: quebeckers, acadians, franco-ontarians. We’ll never have France’s history (though that’s still what htey teach us in school), we’ll never speak exactly like them (though in school they still tell us to try), their ideas of État-nation (one culture, one country) just does not work for Canada yet the separatists are still desperately trying to import it.
