    I’m so glad we never had proms when I was at school. They were unknown in Britain in the days before Molly Ringwald. Sadly, the whole ridiculous tinselly ritual seems to have been imported over here in the past decade or so, stretch limos jammed in narrow lanes, Disney Princess puffball dresses, rugby players in too-tight tuxedos and all.

    @Andrew Pilcher

    Human beings need their rituals! Before the 1960s, marriage was that landmark that separates childhood from adulthood. Now, people get married much later in life, if they get married at all, so the prom took on that role.

    I agree that, just like wedding nowadays, it is blown waaaay out of proportion. It was supposed to be all about getting into adulthood, now it’s all about showing off.

    Congratulations to all new graduates around the northern hemisphere, both for passing their exams and for surviving that human jungle that high school can be.
