Yeah, no I never said that. President is President.
I didn’t like Reagan, I lambasted him to whomever would listen, but he was still THE POTUS.
I didn’t like Nixon. Same story.
I didn’t like W. But I was mostly embarassed for the United States by his actions… and why? Because he was my President of my United States.
I didn’t vote for Obama. And I didn’t vote for him because I listened to what he said and I heard what he DIDN’T say too, and I knew he wasn’t the guy to champion my ideals.
I voted for Clinton, and when he did things that I disagreed with… Sometimes I made excuses, and sometimes I made an issue of his policies (although, when you worked with a bunch of Clinton haters, it was actually tought to make issues of his policies because the discussion would inevitably lead to the most dire of conclusions. He couldn’t just be wrong about this one thing, it had to mean that everything he had ever done was wrong and it just went to prove that Hillary shot Vince Foster and had his body dragged to Arlington Cemetary!)
Sorry Tom, this is a straw man argument. I see where you’re going and I can agree with the message (I think) ; That maybe it would be helpful if those that voted for him could back him up a little more vocally, but I don’t fit the profile and I don’t think that anyone will admit to filling it either.
It’s like in 1975 trying to find someone who admits to having voted for Nixon.
It’s like the way the Republican Party has backed away from George W. Bush (after they did the same with George H Bush after his term). Dissaffected Obama voters will forget who they are.
I don’t think I’ve ever referred to the President of the United States as MY president. Just never would have occurred to me. I don’t own him. However, for those I voted for as well as those I did not, I have always referred to them as “the president” or “President (Name)”. Without respect for the office, one cannot expect respect for one’s arguments.
BTW, I DID vote for Obama, and though I did not expect overly much I am glad that I did.
A note to Republicans, America voted for Obama because of after 8 years of Bush we wanted change. It may not be much but we did get change instead of 4 more years of the same.
Please consider this when selecting your next candidate.
Well, I’d have to say that the assumption of the cartoon is that people who voted for Obama have a reason to dislike his performance, and in that way I’d have to say that it is a “Nobama” commentary.
However, I think that the target of the toon seems to be the knuckleheadedness of the voter who participates in a democracy but doesn’t embrace its concept. And then it takes that common knowledge and tangentilizes to identify a “new” paradox; the apathetic voted.
As I pointed out above, it was hard to find people who voted for Nixon ‘72 in ‘75. It was hard to see how Carter beat Ford given that only about a dozen people seemed to have voted for him in the years ‘81-2008.
Meanwhile, there is a great clam up of the population while the man is still president. Many people would not say a word against W from 2001-2007 and only spoke out against him (and their vote) while he was a “lame duck,” and that was mostly strategy, trying to pull the election away from a referendum on the past president’s legacy. Same sort of thing happened with Clinton. Not so much with H. Bush where the “Read My Lips” meme became the battle cry of the defeated after he lost. “He lost because he broke his promise!” was only common parlance after he was beaten.
Ted Rall makes big sport of this class of people too. He demonizes Obama to try to get the Obama fans to recognize that he’s not following through in the manner expected.
I agree with RV, it seems more of a commentary upon the people in the toon, specifically their silence. But I see it another way, I’d like the Obama voters to stand up and say c’mon, yes, he’s our president and no one said it would be easy or quick. Back off.
(bcs - you have to squint your eyes to see me standing up and saying, “Yes, he’s my president and no one said it would be easy or quick, so back the freak off!”)
briscoe, on the other hand, the people in panel 4 could be saying: “You’re my president! I gave you money, I volunteered my time for you, I made phone calls for you, I voted for you! Bring more bold change to Washington!”
I’ve quite forgotten. I was being my usual obnoxious self of asking serious questions about your religion yet needling you at the same time. You suddenly terminated a discussion we were having yet were still around on other posts so I thought I had gone over the line on a sensitive issue.
No problem my end at all, and thanks.
IMO, every president in the last 30/40 years has made the previous one seem better. Exceptions being Reagan/Carter and Ford/Nixon. Still a little early to see if O’bama can actually make GW seem better. THAT would be an…accomplishment.

I love it! Call out the cons for not supporting bush in his latter years.
By the way, “Don’t look at me. I voted for Donkey Face (Kerry).”

@RV - Yes, you win a prize. Although I don’t have a “right” answer in mind. I’m most interested in how a cartoon is interpreted.
@believe - “Must it be one or the other?” - You’re calling me on my trick question. Dagnabbit!
An interesting note on Ted Rall, he’s said Obama is worse than Bush. If I stand far enough on the left, I see what he means.
