    Other countries have just as many smokers, drinkers, fat people, etc. etc. just like we do, and yet their people aren’t going bankrupt from health costs. They spend a fraction of what we do and still get better results. Nice try, but the public isn’t the problem, the insurance companies are.

    Even if you stop doing all of those things in the panels there’s still a chance that you’ll:

    Get hit by a car

    Get shot, beaten, and/or stabbed by a crazy person

    Get Cancer

    Catch a rare disease

    Fall down the (insert place here)

    There’s a million ways to get hurt and only two ways to get screwed: pay a deductible or pay out of pocket.

    @ Gary Kleppe: yep. Mind you, healthy living will help, but it’s a small part of the entire mess.

    Forgive me d_legendary1, but are you saying since we can’t fix the whole problem we shouldn’t attempt to fix that which we can control? Seems very irresponsible. While we can’t blame someone for an accident like the ones you have described, if they smoke like a freight train their whole life it is only their fault that they get lung cancer, and it was in their hands to stop it.

    I think the first panel is basically the same as the last…that said, the real issue hasn’t even been addressed and I doubt that it will be in the near future. One can only hope that this country will wake up to what the AMA and the Pharma are doing to us.

    Do yourself a favor and look up some alternative health care. Also, read the Hearst News accounts of hospital/MD negligence killing people in this country. For profit health care is WRONG, PEOPLE!!!

    For the record, a comic strip has only so much bandwidth. Hopefully, it can make one point well. It takes a bunch of ‘em to get a full view of any issue.

    So this strip doesn’t describe the full problem or the full solution on health care. But it shows one thing that would unquestionably help in my view.

    @Kleppe – I’m a fan. :)

    @Corosive Frog – Exactly! Those things are deadly.

    @somewhereintime – Oh, I’ll be doing a cartoon about the Food Police for sure.

    iamthemodextremist Not at all. But how should people take care of those dirty addictions, since that is what they are?

    You’ve heard the P.S.A.’s that say smokers are more likely to get addicted on their first cigarette than someone who smokes their first joint. How do you get someone who’s been smoking forever off the cancer sticks? I tried cold turkey and failed miserably until several months ago when I actually quit. I found a purpose not to smoke, but let me tell you its not easy. I’ve done both and quite frankly I don’t get jitters thinking about how good a joint feels right about now.

    Its like the old saying goes, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.” Not everyone will be fond of losing their addictions, since that’s what they have become accustomed to.
