Not too many more years before the Neo-Puritans get tobacco declared illegal. That’s when the drug lords will move in. Then the gummint will spend trillions (trillion is the new billion) on the War on Tobacco. And all this after we’ve seen how well Prohibition and the War on Drugs have gone. Why don’t we ever learn from history?
regulation is not banning. Regulation means you have to be honest about what’s in your product and what it can do to people. Banning means making it illegal to sell. So which is the government doing? And why should regulation lead automatically to banning? I do not buy that old slippery slope canard.
cdward: While I agree not all slopes are slippery, it is perfectly valid to project people’s beliefs to their logical conclusion. As long as people continue to act on the same principles, they will get more of the same result. If regulation is good, then more regulation must be better, right?
That’s an interesting interpretation of regulation you have there. It totally covers up the fact that regulations almost always lead to more regulation. Regarding tobacco, the people who know better how we should live our lives than we do will not be satisfied until they get their utopian wish.
Don’t be fooled by the trick of replacing one set of regulations with another and calling it DE-regulation. True deregulation has been extremely rare in recent American history. Usually they just fold one government agency’s functions into another and say they reduced regulation.
Also, note the difference between a branch of the DA’s office that would prosecute fraudulent advertising versus a government bureaucracy that forces manufacturers and advertisers to try to prove they are not guilty. The first is a valid function of government; the second is not. (The proper function of government is for another day.)
Disclaimer: I’m totally biased here. I hate smoking. My parents did it for years and the stench still makes me ill. At my old job people smoked in the office and eventually I had to quit (the job). So as far as I’m concerned ban it! Then those who have to do it will purchase smokes illegally and go underground to do so instead of contaminating the air I breathe! phew I know it’s probably not the right thing to do, but I don’t always follow the most fair path in favor of my own self interest :)

“it is perfectly valid to project people’s beliefs to their logical conclusion. ”
And if you extend it beyond that to reach a conclusion that no one has?
