As I first learned on PBS as a little kid, electrons radiated from a radionuclide are stopped by paper.

Sigh. I miss the days when PBS was about arts, history, and education, not indoctrination. I drew the line when they did a program advocating Castro, rewriting what happened from 1959 on.

    Your memory is not reliable.
It’s alpha particles that are stopped by paper.
Betas (high-energy electrons) need more shielding, preferably a slab of low-density material. Check it on Wikipedia.

Sweetheart: “Lots and lots of iodine.”

I guess it’s not surprising that one of the first wind-ups to break down is the one tasked with doing everyone’s repairs…

How many layers of Little Debbie cakes would Sweetheart need to cover herself with, then?

By the way, the iodine is intended to saturate the thyroid so it doesn’t take up any radioactive iodine isotopes, which are fission products from uranium or plutonium, and which are usually released as a gas. And radioactive iodine emits beta particles.
