I lost my brother Tom to liver disease in 2013, age 62, pre ACA. Over his last two years, I cannot tell you how difficult it was for him to get healthcare, basic, adequate, timely, affordable, reliable healthcare.

I would not wish Tom’s demise on anybody, but the RepubliCons do.

Sorry about your brother. I hope that your story makes people stop and realize that the US did not have “the finest healthcare system in the world” as many right wingers have insisted to me. Something had to change. The ACA may not be perfect (I would prefer a single-payer system myself), but the Republicans have offered no plan whatsoever.

Be sure to see the video that Signe is referring to. It is quite funny as well as effective in getting the word out about healthcare.gov (I apologize that I do not know how to embed the video into my post, though I know it is possible to do)

Yes, he set a new standard for boorish behavior and worthless interviews by a President. Future Presidents will have to work very hard to lower the standard further.

This is the kind of thing that gives conservative PACs heartburn. They spend millions and the President does something like this and has a huge impact with the younger generation. Who says he isn’t smart.

If Obamacare worked then Obama and his administration wouldn’t continually push back the dates to start portions of it mandated by law. The employer mandate has been pushed back now until Obama is out of office. He knows full well that its implementation will be a disaster many times the magnitude of the individual mandate.
It isn’t the crappy website that is the fundamental problem with this law, it is the law itself. It was badly written, includes numerous high cost provisions (like the pre-existing condition mandate, or the one-size-fits-all style of coverage), job killing items (like the 30 hour number on what workers have to be covered), and economic disincentives like taxes on medical devices.
    .
It is a bad law written by idiots and fosited on the American people by morons.

The GOP loves its failed solutions. More tax cuts! More show votes to repeal health care! More grandstanding!

The GOP itself is a failed solution, as its core gets more ancient, more senile, and more dead.

I expect the Kochs have contingency plans and are investing in Democratic politicians to cover their bets for the long run. Lucky us.

Who designed the basic concept of “Obamacare”? That’s right, Mitt Romney.
He instituted it while he was the governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

I lost Five family members before ACA to various forms of cancer. I know the pain and now that I have been forced to join the ACA thanks to Obamacare regulations that said my employee provided health care did not meet the standards I now pay more for less coverage and will not be able to pay for the deductibles if one family member has to be hospitalized. MY Hospitalization deductible under ACA went from $5000 for Family to $5000 and individual. How is that affordable? ACA is not about reform it’s about control.

if it was not the finest then why did the wealthy from all over the world come to America for health care. I guess you like the single payer system until like the English you have to wait 3 to 6 months for a doctors appointment for anything other than an emergency( that’s what their hospitals are for now.

    @Kevin Robinson

What America has is cutting edge medical technology, if one can afford it. That does little good if one cannot afford it.

If, as you seem to believe, America had the best health care system in the world before the ACA, why does virtually every other industrialized country spend less than half of what the US spends per capita and get better results?

Regarding the long waits the right trumpets for this or that country with a single-payer system, they are mostly myths. Even in the cases where a wait is required, they are usually elective procedures that can be delayed without significant consequence. Still better than a system where millions go without any coverage and thus have no hope of ever getting the procedure.

One more observation: Any Canadian I have ever spoken to, even those who complain up and down about the Canadian system, if asked whether they would trade their system for the US (non-existent) system will look at you as if you are crazy for even suggesting such a thing. In countries such as Canada and Britain even politicians who are considered right of center have no interest in converting to the US system.

Alas you story is where the real “death panels” are and they really aren’t so dramatic. If the accountant gives too high a number the CEO says “no.” So our lives really do have a price.

More people die from treatable illness in the USA than in any other first world country.

You mean they have a magical cure for what ever ails his brother?
    -
Please don’t denigrate this situation yet you do. Nothing magic about getting treatment. Except in the USA where only money talks.
