Basketball players are more willing to show how tough they are once they’re not at the mercy of some power-mad college coach. Ask P.J. Carlesimo how his transition to the NBA went after he tried to pull his Seton Hall crap on Latrell Sprewell.

You’re being penny-wise and pound foolish. The expense of congressmen is not their salaries, it’s the perks they give ($380 million for a missle system that doesn’t work, and that the defense department doesn’t want, as the most recent example) to companies that contribute to their campaigns. If Americans were smart, we’d have the tax payers finance campaigns and ban private donations. Then the companies could argue for special favors on their merits, not on quid-pro-quo.

The answer is implicit in your question: dumb people do dumb things…

Why is it when people make public apologies, it leaves you wondering if they are really sorry or sorry they got caught?

Depends on the apology. Someone who says “I am sorry for the wrong I have done; I didn’t realize I had done wrong, and now I know better” is really sorry. Someone who says “I am sorry anyone was offended” (implying that it was THEIR fault for being offended) or “I’m sorry we had to waste time on this, let’s move on” is sorry they got caught.

It took Rutgers way to long to act properly, of course, but I am encouraged that, except for the real extremist haters, the outcry about this was immediate when the video went online. This kind of behavior is just not acceptable in civilized society, and that is becoming more and more apparent. I know some of the 19th century thinkers whine about ‘political correctness’, but that is only the pathetic voice of the ‘angry white man’ that is fading away.

My favorite is: “I think I might owe you an apology.”
Okay, I’m waiting…. but that’s all there is. And the jerk (former boss) pretended that he had apologized!!!

The antics of coach Rice were just spiffy with the likes of Hannity and Malkin – “I got beat up when I was a kid, and I turned out ok. We’re turning into a nation of wimps.”
