If he tries to clean up the Vatican bank from doing its money laundry business he might wake up dead like Pope John Paul I .

Whatever one feels about the Roman Catholic Church, the immediate future certainly looks like it will be entertaining.
Boy, I wish I was a whole bunch of flies on a lot of walls inside there at the moment.
And some people are surely squirming. The comfortable ride is going to get rather bumpy.

The cardinal seen as a rabid reformer who’d clean things up is still a cardinal. The cardinal seen as the biggest insider who’d make sure things stayed exactly as they are is still a cardinal.
Pope Cisco the Kid should be shown holding question marks in both hands, with a few sparrows perched on his arms.
We know all about the rumours that he helped the government create desaparecidos, and the story of the tiny flat with no servants that he lived in as cardinal, and that he mostly used public transportation. But what he’ll be as Pope, no one except maybe Cisco has any idea.

There is a new pope. Whoopie. Now get lives, people.

And Obama is still president. Get on with your life Ima. There are 1 billion plus people to whom this DOES matter. Read some world history to figure out why!

I think you are right. What he was a a priest, bishop and cardinal don’t matter now. He is the Pope, and as he becomes immersed in the Vatican it will slowly envelope him. After his election he went and paid his bill in true honorable fashion. But that was his decision, within his control. As Pope more of those decisions will be removed from his control as politics and the mechanics of the Vatican get involved and have to be navigated. Not to mention he is reported to have a very conservative ideology so little is likely to change. At least little of substance to the real world and it’s people’s real lives..

Nice cartoon. It hadn’t occurred to me that if they HAD chosen a pope from Africa, The Onion could have re-run it’s headline “Black Man Given World’s Worst Job.”

Christianity was founded on the teachings and ministry of a man who railed against the corruption and abuse of organized religion of his time. How sad that the organized religions that claim to spread Christ’s teachings have themselves become corrupt, abusive, and oppressive.

Entertaining to disinterested middle class straight men, perhaps. I highly doubt those who are ignored or oppressed by Church dogma find it so.

Pope = Protector of Pedophiles Emeritus. We’ll see if the Hispanic will clean up the mess left by the dirty white boys or if he’ll just perpetuate it.

He’s gonna need that extra-strength cleanser. You know, the one that’s labeled “for use on built-up lies, corruption and malfeasance”.

@Omnius
Can’t argue with that.
I hope all other religions clean up their acts in this regard. Especially the Dalai Lama’s group.
And then they go after the Atheists. They’re no better than any other.
And finally root out all institutions that have no affiliations to anything but have harmed children.
