I have a feeling that very few mothers say things like “Study hard so you can compete in a global economy!”
They might say “Study hard so you can maybe avoid working 40 years in a factory at starvation wages!” At least, that’s what my grandfather said to me, more or less.
His phrasing may have been slightly more obscene, though.
My Dad wanted to go into the building trades like his father, uncle and cousins.
My grandfather (who had missed being laid off by Chicago Edison by about five seniority numbers in the Great Depression) said to forget it - there had been regular downswings in the trades for as long as he could recall, and my Dad was going to be a professional.
So Dad went to U of I (where he met my mother) and became an accountant.
Don’t know how accountants are doing right now, but i know the trades are in trouble.
my dad was a rancher in Texas…he used to say “Study hard and go to college so you don’t have to work like I do”…shucks, all I ever wanted to be was a rancher, so I majored in Ranch management…he sold the ranch, and I became aa contractor…wish they’d had trade schools back then.
Meowdam, I fear you’re being unjustly hard on Ms Wilkinson. The «Chinese ‘coolie’ pigtail» was a hair style (which also involved the shaving of the front of the head) imposed on Han Chinese men to show their subservience to their Manchu rulers - queues were not required of women. The woman in the cartoon would seem to be wearing an entirely apolitical ponytail….
Signe Wilkinson's honors include the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning (the first woman to win this award), the 1997, 2001 and 2007 Overseas Press Club Award, the 2002 RFK Award and she has the distinction of having been named "the Pennsylvania state vegetable substitute" by the former speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Her cartoons are syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group.

charlie555, that made no sense whatsoever. I work in the “global economy,” if you want to count international management consulting. Hardly servile.

That Chinese “coolie ” pigtail is a little racist .
40% of Fox viewers still think the kid was in the balloon !
