well I certainly agree with this sentiment …. I don’t really get why the town decided to 86 the test in the first place ….

If an employment test has a racist result, it’s a racist test. That was the legal principle for more than forty years. Republicans were outraged at Sotomayor for siding with precedent. Now, they’re celebrating because the Supreme Court decided to be activists.

Funny how I remember a bigot in RVN with a big hole in him not being very fussy about the medic’s skin tone.

oh no - another one of you guys with a secret handshake. oldleg calls me a “newby”. so you’re the one everybody’s so glad to hear from again - welcome back. sorry for my ignorance, but what’s rvn?

I’m with Humph- saw the same thing. (RVN=Republic of Viet Nam) I also worked in rescues with men/women/most racial and ethnic groups, and it was always the same in that field as well. People who care about people, only see PEOPLE.(our victims felt the same way)

It makes Libs feel good to point out the obvious.

OK, after reading more about the case, I understand the issue more, I think. The promotional test had two parts: written and oral. Blacks and hispanics fared poorly on the oral, with passing percentages less than the perentages they scored on the written.
Oral exams are more subjective, by nature and are not “blind” as is the written exam.
The issue got into how much each portion of test should be weighted, which is obviously far more complicated.
However, Copper states the facts accurately. Sotomayor and her fellow jurists allowed existing precedent to remain when they voted not to hear the case for reversal.

Hey “parker”, not to worry about “secret handshake”, just post. I did a lot, some good and some not so good. I think the welcome back is just good people being good people . Background - I’m dealing with a med problem and a lot of the posters were aware of it. Took an unexpected turn and there were a few “bumps” with the meds. Thanks with the thoughts ya’ll ;o)

Why would blacks or hispanics fare more poorly on an oral exam than a written one? I’m certain that the fire department is not testing their vocabulary, grammar or pronunciation. I’m still confused by this. Of course, pure laziness thus far has prevented me from actually researching what exactly happened, I keep hoping someone here will post it. heh. :)

PARKER, NOBODY ever gets any thanks around here. (well almost never). It’s all about PERSPECTIVE, of which Humphries has, in my book. Of which myself and others have missed.
