About what ours cost (the dog money) a year for medicines. Sadly too many German shepherds, good dogs that they are, are too inbred.

You shouldn’t go for the full-blooded type if you don’t want to win prizes. They are all far overbred.
Choose one with a little flaw in it’s family tree.
Blood from outside makes the dogs tougher.
And to hell with some small unusual features. A slightly heavier body or else.
As long as the German sheperd has no Labrador’s ears …

Avoid purebreds if you want one that’s good for anything but dog shows.

    Why do they wear kegs?

I disagree cubefarmer. I’ve had purebred Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs for 15 yrs now. They pull carts, go backpacking wearing their own packs, herd sheep, are therapy dogs, do agility, obedience, rally, and yes attend conformation dog shows. They do what they are bred to do.

I didn’t know that German Shepherds were bird dogs.

My family has had great success with German shepherd/black Labrador mixes, both adopted from people who had to give them up.
One had shepherd ears (Zeb) and the other had Lab ears (Max). Max was one of the brightest dogs that I ever met – you had to spell some key words backwards so he wouldn’t recognize them. Zeb (formerly Zeppelin, named for Led Zeppelin’s song “Black Dog”) was no slouch, either.

Zeb’s new name was for Zebulon Walton (Will Geer), the grandfather on “The Waltons.” Max came with his name. We extended it to Maxwell Marmaduke.
