There were rumours at the time that Pat Garret staged the whole shootout because he was friends with Billy. There is no concrete evidence of a friendship though.
.
Me, I think he died.

Garret went out to dinner for the rest of his seedy life on the legend but there was no real proof that William Henry McCarty Jr. aka Henry Antrim, aka William H. Bonney actually was assassinated by the so-called lawman.

On a similar note, there is some debate as to whether Butch Cassidy was killed with the Sundance Kid. Butch’s body was never properly identified.

@Bruno Zeigerts
It was also reported they both returned to New York. You know what they say, “When the legend becomes fact, stick with the legend.” But we’ve become so obsessed with destroying legends, that would be impossible today.

History is not only written by the winner. It’s likewise interpreted by them.

I always thought that Pat Garrett operated a sheepskin coat shop and country music station just off of Interstate 78 in Berks County, PA! ;-)

The Perfesser must have been channel surfing. The voiceover says ‘we now return,’ but if he’d been watching all along, why would he only roll his eyes now?

Also, Pat (the country singer who also owns the sheepskin shop) has his official website at patgarrett.com.

There’s also a rumor that John Wilkes Booth escaped from the soldiers hunting him down and lived the rest of his life in obscurity, finally committing suicide in 1903.
I really don’t believe it.

I am firmly convinced, after researching this for over 100 years, that they ALL died!

Did you know that every male that ate tomatoes in 1903 died? It’s the truth.
