A comedian once did this routine.

A kid’s a college and writes his dad:

    “No Mon”

    “No Fun”

    “Son”

    Dad writes back:

    “Too Bad.”

    “So Sad.”

    “Dad.”

I don’t know- I think the daughter has the concept of “necessary communications” down pretty well…

That is ‘as old as the hills’ or me whichever comes first. My Dad told me those exact same words when I was in college—many, many years ago.

Well, for most young people, college is their first taste of independence.
The last thing they need are “helicopter” parents.

    Boy is that old!
I can remember it from a copy of “Junior Scholastic” I had in the 6th grade (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth).

    re: Susan Newman

I went to a community college my first two years, despite later graduating from OIT. It was a source of amusement how almost every person I went to high school with that went to a four year university was doing make-up classes th second year I was at comm college. They’d all flunked out by doing the party circuit. It’s not easy to flunk out of a B.A. program, especially at places like UofO or SOU’s Arts and Letters College.
    .
Somewhere along the way at least 3 of them became “porn stars”. They’d apparently made the decision to make money via their chosen lifestyles.

Son to parents as he leaves for college: “Write often, even if it’s just a couple of bucks”.

My daughter is away at university. Calls on google talk 5 6 times a week. Great kid. I have a relationship with her that most mothers would be envious of.

What do you mean by “porn stars”? Obviously they did not make a living doing adult films as your quotation marks imply a euphemism that I do not understand.
