You’ve never seen a steam locomotive in operation, apparently! Ever hear of the term, “smoking like a freight train”?
It comes from the “dirty” smokestack on an old steam locomotive used for freight, as they had to be fed a lot of coal to generate the steam needed to pull such a heavy load, especially in mountain terrain.
Passenger locomotives were encouraged to have a “clean stack.”

But the steam itself never gets dirty – it’s always white.
It does leave boiler sludge, though. 8^(

actually, steam is colorless; it’s not “white” until it condenses back into water mist

Are you serious? That black smoke IS smoke….from the coal! Steam is white and it comes from hot water which the coal heated.

Steam is clear, water vapor is white.

Steam, or wator vapor, is the biggest “global warming” chemical, far bigger than CO2. Time to outlaw steam cleaners, hot showers, and Yellowstone’s Old Faithful.

Surprising that people who can read on the level of cartoons still are so dumb that they do not know what steam is. School was definitely wasted on some folk

And with all this debate, nobody noticed that Loon dropped his pants in the 2nd panel? What’s that all about?

Loon doesn’t wear pants. He wears skates. The colorist goofed, apparently.
