There’s too much symmetry in that picture.

I think there is some primitive component of human nature that drives them to kill those who have different beliefs. There is never a winner just endless misery and destruction.

I am convinced that humans have an innate need to feel superior. I live in a better neighborhood, I drive a cooler car, my team won the championship, my religion is better.

But when you mix in the fact that your chosen Supreme Being is on your team, your team becomes invincible, and your team is never wrong.

There was a three-part series on CNN a couple years ago called “God’s Warriors”. One part was devoted to fundamentalist Islam, one to fundamentalist Christianity, one to fundamentalist Judaism.

Representatives of each group basically said the same thing: there is an ancient scroll, I believe it, and anyone who doesn’t is wrong. If they try to make me feel differently, I’ll kill them if I have to.

As long as we ignore the “peace and love” aspect and embrace the “I’m superior because my scroll says so” mindset, there will be continued strife.

Interesting CNN didn’t cover militant atheism or militant Buddahism (sp?) or militantcy in general.

I think you put that well. My only comment is why limit it to a scroll? People will use any excuse to hold themselves superior to those who don’t hold the same view. Look at these comment pages and the way one party’s supporters talk to and about the other. Take a look at many of the Communist regimes of the last century. Millions died because of a political creed.

It’s sad. People follow the path of least resistance. And it’s much easier to walk downhill than uphill

Its the concept of status. You see it in all animal societies. Humans, having the largest societies, have the most pronounced concept of status. Some people just take it much, much farther than others.

“My only comment is why limit it to a scroll?”

Your points are well-considered. Certainly, weaponry allows for feelings of superiority and for control of the masses. (This is the conflict between the people who want guns for protection and those who feel the need to parade around with an AK-47 strapped to them.) Can you imagine Dirty Harry being able to make his cool speech if he had a slingshot?

My point is that religion provides even more justification for any position taken. If “God wants it”, who can argue with God, no matter how ungodly the behavior may be.

    I don’t know. Eastwood is pretty tall…

I get your point and don’t disagree. Religion has been used to excuse some of the most heinous crimes in History. And I can see where, from an oppressor’s point of view, saying ‘God is on our side’ makes their brutality seem sexy in their own mind.

I just find it interesting how that same phenomena occurs in secular groups, but yet no one really seems to point to it and wave like they do when religion is used. As an aside, I do not mean to imply that is what you meant or what you said. I’m simply riffing off your comment.

Deep down in the base coding of our genetics, humans are tribal creatures. We instinctively hate and fear the “other”, because they will come to kill our tribe and take our things, so we must go to kill their tribe and take their things first.
    .
Rational humans reject these instincts, recognizing them as harmful. Unfortunately, humans are also genetically predisposed towards irrationality….

“I guess the libs here would have gone along with the Nazis while they went about murdering every jewish man ,woman and child they could catch.”

It wasn’t “libs” who bankrolled the Nazi party. Unless you consider the Bush family “libs”.

“Nice little lie there you anti semitic bigot”

Actually, he’s referring to the red heifer. It’s in the Torah and thought to signify the Jewish version of the “end of days”. Look it up.
