    That may have been why they tried to ban it. If you can’t understand it, squash it.

    As a teen in the 60’s, a friend told me what the real lyrics were as Louie Louie played in the background. I also heard the Kingsmen play the song live in 1966 in Phoenix. The real lyrics to Louie Louie are obscene, really, really obscene, though about half of them are unintelligible. Teenagers think that kind of thing is funny, or at least I did when I was that age.

    Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go.
    Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go.
    A fine little girl, she waits for me.
    Me catch the ship across the sea.
    I sailed the ship all alone.
    I never think I’ll make it home.
    Louie Louie, me gotta go.
    Three nights and days we sailed the sea.
    Me think of girl constantly.
    On the ship, I dream she there.
    I smell the rose in her hair.
    Louie Louie, me gotta go.
    Me see Jamaican moon above.
    It won’t be long me see me love.
    Me take her in my arms and then
    I tell her I never leave again.
    Louie Louie, oh baby, I said we gotta go

    kinda surprising vocalist Blue is unintelligible, when his/her speaking voice comes across so clearly.

    @Burnout70s

    From Wikipedia: “Another factor in the success of the record may have been the rumor that the lyrics were intentionally slurred by the Kingsmen. Allegedly, this was to cover the fact that it was laced with profanity, graphically depicting sex between the sailor and his lady. Crumpled pieces of paper professing to be ‘the real lyrics’ to ‘Louie Louie’ circulated among teens. The song was banned on many radio stations and in many places in the United States, including Indiana, where it was personally prohibited by the Governor, Matthew Welsh.”

    yep, I remember having an argument with my dad over the lyrics……

    just like the one I had with him over “Puff the Magic Dragon”.

    on an aside, I sang Puff to my son and daughter when they were babies……..it was meant as a lullaby.

    Back in the early 80s a radio station changed format and played nothing but Louie Louie versions for several days. Most of them came from the west coast.

    @Rockngolfer

    I remember that.
    KFRC- Foothill Community College played a Louie Louie marathon a few years in a row. A great radio station, they had many good shows back then. Have been out of that area for years now so don’t know if they have kept up or not.
