The only real “resource” Syria had was the pipelines to transport that Iraqi oil from Kurdistan in northern Iraq to Latakia on the Mediterranean, but those have been shut down since August of 1990 when the UN slapped sanctions on Iraqi Oil after its invasion of Kuwait.
Since then, the Syrian government’s fortunes under both presidents Asaad have been flagging.
As for why the Russians are still backing the current Asaad regime, it’s probably more of a show of how Russian forces and equipment do in the battlefield and this could be used as a marketing tool to sell Russian military equipment as well as their technical services for the next country out there willing to pay them.
