    Why are automatic weapons illegal? Isn’t that a violation of the right to bear arms?

    @braindead08

    The right to bear arms is to enable the states to maintain a well regulated militia. The states are able maintain their national guard units whether or not paranoid citizens are allowed to purchase weapons whose sole purpose it to kill other humans.

    If used right, a cigarette will kill you slowly. If used properly a weapon, gun, will save your life when you need it most.

    “The right to bear arms is to enable the states to maintain a well regulated militia.”

    This may be the way you would like it to be, but Supreme Court rulings ever since the Constitution was written are not in agreement with what you would like. They have pretty consistently ruled in favor of the individual.

    Nope. The supremes have always upheld laws to license guns, restrict assault weapons, and otherwise make gun ownership more safe for the public. “Second amendment rights” for anyone, no matter how dangerous or crazy, to own any weapon, no matter how destructive, are just right-wing fantasies not based in constitutional law.

    The crazy thing is that both Reagan’s and Bush’s Surgeon Generals said the exact same thing as Obama’s appointee, and conservatives at that time accepted it as true (which it is). Conservatism is no longer a rational movement, and is now a knee-jerk reactive movement violently against any sensible ideas.

    Since when does the N.R.A. have the right to make or break Cabinet level appointments?
    They just work using fear and intimidation to get THEIR way, and to hell with EVERYONE else.

    Props to ARodney for actually addressing the point of the cartoon.

    To my knowledge the surgeon general’s health (or any appointee) has not been affected by the NRA in any way shape or form, what this cartoon implies is at best irresponsible.

    @Jase99: “purchase weapons whose sole purpose it to kill other humans.”
    Then by your logic cars should be outlawed since they are designed to kill humans too. Cars can travel at speeds where they cannot keep their occupants safe should a collision occur. I personally have many friends killed via automobiles and non by guns.

    Exactly right. No Where does it say that citizens have the right to ‘bear’ arm for the sake of bearing arms. It is always linked to the states need to have a ready and armed militia on hand.
    It is the NRA and the gun nuts who have bent the mean out of the constitution.

    That is not true. The current craziness about gun ownership has come in the last 30 years. Actually before the 70’s the NRA was all for gun control, but the radical right took over the NRA and the country has suffered ever since.
