Blaming the NRA for any gun violence is like blaming AAA for drunk drivers.

The NRA donates to republicans, therefore they are evil.

Well, we should definitely ban all trucks that contain explosives. And other things that contain explosives. Oh, wait a sec.

That is a false equivalency. AAA does not advocate the repeal of drunk driving laws.

I Don’t think any rational person wants to ban ALL guns.
Banning Military style high capacity clips, automatic and semi-automatic weapons might be about the equivalent to banning military style vehicles from private ownership.
How many people in your neighborhood drive an M1-A1 Abrams tank to work, or to the drive through at the
    McDonald’s?
How many people with a regular pilot’s license have a F-16 sitting in the hanger?
Why don’t people complain about THAT?

    Talk about false equivalency…but OK.

Answer me thins. At what point is a semi-automatic gun not put on the “banned” list? I have a shotgun that is semi automatic. You want to ban it? I have a .22 that is semi- automatic, ban it too? I have a pistol that is semi-automatic, banned?

Now I take some pride in the fact that I hit what I shoot at – 95% of the time – so having 30 rounds at my disposal is not “necessary” but it would be “convenient” to not have to reload magazines all the time. Oh yeah that’s right I have 5 10 round magazines so I don’t…LOL.

Really, dude, the equipment is not the problem.

In any organization the moderates need to rein in the radicals, the NRA is no different.

I would agree with you if the AAA would lobby against state inspections, speed limits, and traffic signals.

Well put. It is true that a lot of gun owners, especially responsible ones, have a knee-jerk reaction to ANY talk of gun control, which is “You’re not taking my guns away.” I think it’s safe to say that many people, including yourself, are responsible users of guns, and I have no desire to remove them from your possession, and I think a lot of others feel the same way. On the other hand, can we agree that some people should not be allowed access to weapons? The problem, of course, is how to allow safe and sane gun ownership while protecting our constitutional right to “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.

Again, the polarization of our society means that people are so busy shouting that no one hears.

I would hope that the NRA is willing to join the discussion, as their members’ input (and their willingness to be a partner in the final decisions) will have great value.

Maybe we can stop pointing fingers and calling names and act like adults.

    Maybe.

Look at all the whining the gun nuts are doing and in reality they are only beginning to talk about limiting semi automatics and large gun clips.

Thanks Doc. A voice of reason, how refreshing. I have endorsed a national standard of gun control that emulates California, where I live. They already subscribe to everything the president advocates (and more) except a ban on the sale of assault weapons. I’m sure that will follow.

Unfortunately this so often becomes a partisan debate and the middle ground is lost. Emotions are high and I think the president was wise to form the gun violence commission and look for their report a month down the road. I’m sure they will suggest enactment of what he has already spoken in favor of.

Five rifles, three shotguns, and three hand guns, and not worried about losing them, and they would all still be legal if high capacity magazines, and “combat weapons” (not “assault weapons”) are banned. Hunting, sporting clays, and self defense does NOT require a 30 round magazine, or testosterone firing “design elements”.

Bruce says, “having 30 rounds at my disposal is not “necessary” but it would be “convenient” to not have to reload magazines all the time.” Is your convenience protected by the Constitution? Does your convenience outweigh someone’s life?
