A smart watch for Rob Rogers: A url link to inform him Russia no longer uses the U.S.S.R.’s hammer & sickle

Lowering of the last Soviet flag, Moscow, 26 December 1991"

What do you think Putin is trying to restore???

Russian military aircraft still use the red star, Russian military units still carry red colors, Aeroflot still uses the hammer an sickle, and (at least until recently) the towers of the Kremlin are still topped with illuminated red stars. And the military newspaper is still Krasnaya Zvezda, which means Red Star. (Red Square is still called Red Square, too, although that name went all the way back to Imperial Russia.) It seems that Putin is quite OK with retention of at least some of these Soviet era symbols. Somewhat ironic that it is OK in Russia but in Germany, displaying the swastika is an offense punishable by up to one year imprisonment.

Putin is nostalgic for the old Empire.

In addition to all of the above (As this is a political cartoon and not Recent History for Beginners) Cartoons 101: Familiar symbols are used to identify persons or objects that are caricatures and therefore might be hard to recognize, thereby rendering the illustration less effective.

Putin refers to the time that the USSR existed as"the good old days".
He is trying to reassemble it.
    Where have you been?

The House passed a Border Security Bill on Friday, August 1st, just before August recess, 223-189. The Senate was already in recess and didn’t vote on it. Nor will they ever. They don’t want a Border Security Bill. They don’t want a Comprehensive Immigration Bill. They want an Amnesty Bill. They ain’t gonna get one.

Unless Republicans take everything. That’s the only time those things get passed, usually while you drones are busy celebrating about something or other. Haven’t you noticed that yet? http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128303672

YOU may be against amnesty, but the people you vote for most certainly ARE for it, and for exactly the reason you are against it, it lowers wages for US citizens.

Germany still uses a familiar Roundel which replaced the similar Balkenkreuz whereas the Swastika has now become synonymous with Nazism.
As you said, the Red Star is still widely used, the hammer & sickle not. Why not just use the Red Star? It is familiar enough as well and spot on.

Putin does not require an outdated (it was replaced 23 years ago) and erroneous symbol to identify him. Using it perpetuates errors and tells me the cartoonist might understand the subject matter a whole lot less. The hammer & sickle has been dropped by everyone except Aeroflot and the communist party. Putin is no longer part of the Communist Party, he is a member of the United Russia party, which uses a …bear as its symbol. A simple Red Star is familiar enough and is in still in wide use.
