What did the River Thames back then smell like: sewer sludge?

The weight of water is 62.42 pounds/foot^3.

Using 2000 pounds per ton, the largest blue whales are 400,000 pounds.

Dividing through, that turns out to be 6,408.2 cubic feet.

    That’s a cube of water almost 18’ 7" on a side.

Put another way, that’s just over 1 2/3 typical 53 feet long 18-wheeler trailers full of water.

I remember a river that caught on fire here in the US back in the 60’s just do not remember what city it was in.

With a nose like that he was probably worried about the rotten things much further afield, like in the state of Denmark.

I believe they were referring to multiple athletes, not any particular individual.

Pollution was lethal. The famous London smog was killing people, the Thames was a flowing cesspool of toxins and the occasional corpse.

Why would John use William Gladstone’s nose as an illustration? It was said his silhouette was that of a man playing a saxophone.
