    One of my ancestors was into piracy. Being Irish, he attacked British ships. But since the Spanish had the gold, he had to go after them too. He ended up living in France, spending most of his fortune on rum and women. He wasted the rest of it though.

    And often that change was heralded by a new king on the throne. I also remember another “pirate” who was wanted by the English king, but when that king died, the new king gave the “pirate” knighthood and letters patent to be a privateer.

    A privateer is still a pirate, they just have a get-out-of-jail-free card from their government and have to pay them a certain percentage of what they pillage in return.
