Ripley's Believe It or Not has been presenting the incredible and the unusual in illustrated form since Robert Ripley's first "Champs and Chumps" comic published on Dec. 19, 1918. Currently, B.I.O.N. is illustrated by John Graziano, who has been working as an artist and illustrator since 1983, when he received a certificate in illustration from the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. He has designed trading card sets and a portrait series based on the 1960s cult TV show "Dark Shadows." John has also created comic strips for "Scream Queens" magazine, designed t-shirts graphics and created storyboards and concept drawings for Hollywood films. Researcher Lucas Stram has worked since 2004 as the voice behind the cartoon, reviewing potential stories, filtering through the hundreds of weekly submissions and putting together the stories for John to bring to life. New submissions are always welcome. Just click here.

Balloons & Blunderbusses, that is how the duel was fought in the movie “Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines!”

@DaJellyBelly
I think the German guy won the duel, but punctured his balloon with the spike on his helmet.

so that means the width of it’s head is as long as half the length of it’s body?

I wonder if one of the duellists was related to George Grandpré (1905-1983), famous cartoon animator. He mainly worked for Warner Bros. in their “Termite Terrace” animation department making Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons. He also helped make the Pink Panther cartoons.

Nevertheless, he finished his speech before seeking medical attention. He was as tough as nails.

TR was not President at the time of that assassination attempt. It happened while he was running for office on the Progressive ( Bull Moose ) ticket, a move that basically destroyed his poiltical career. The Republican Party never forgave him for splitting the Repub vote and handing the election to Democrat Woodrow Wilson

“It takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.”

There’s an interesting write-up of The Balloon Duel by Tom Sleman at http://thomasslemen.tripod.com/balloon.html
It ends:
“…De Grand returned to earth, the hero of the day, and he marched straight to the most beautiful woman in Europe. She had agreed to marry the survivor, but a woman who stood between him removed her hood. She announced that De Grand was already married – to her. And her lawyer produced the marriage papers to prove it. So Gwen Tirevitt married De Grand’s assistant, and she bore him 5 children.”
