My understanding is that it stands for “Save Our Ship”, at least that’s what I was told when I was in the Navy.

OK, Tommasino A. Cat was his(her?) name. What did the “A” stand for?

Whether it was a random signal selected because it’s easy to remember or not, it’s generally accepted as meaning “Save Our Ship”. As long as it summons aid, what does it matter?

Maybe we should elect another Independent to the White House. We might get lucky again, and he couldn’t do any worse than the last two dolts who’ve occupied the mansion.

No, “S” is the only Morse character comprised of 3 dits, and “O” is the only character with 3 dahs (or dots and dashes).

George Washington also said that political parties were a bad idea. Too bad no one listened to him.

Well, the message would be a little hard to figure out if more than one Morse character had only 3 dots or 3 dashes, wouldn’t it?

Oh great. As the ship sinks, the band is still on board, playing ‘Nearer My God To Thee’ but the conductor leads them from the lifeboat.

The distress signal that SOS replaced was CQD, which in Morse code is (using an underline for a dash and an “o” for a dot to be more visible on this message board):
    o_o_ _ o _ oo. Compare that to ooo _ _ ooo.
    (o o_ ooo_ _ o_ _ o o _ o _)
