    There was a large “ATM” sign alongside a gas station in my old home town, on which the graphic designer, for some unknown reason, had included three parallel dashes in front of the A and after the M. Driving down the road towards the sign, you’d swear it said “EATME” in big, bold letters, because that is how the mind interpreted it. It was there for years like that, a famous local joke, until the station was closed and torn down.
