    Not an old wives’ tale; 50% of heat loss is through the head. That’s a problem with heat-retaining caps and hats in summer. But keeping arms, hands, feet, and legs warm in winter is also useful. And looking again at the cartoon, so’s shoveling the sidealks and paths…

    If he wears a full ski mask, he could be a ghost rider in disguise!

    …that was based on a military cold weather study in which the only exposed part of the person was the head……

    You beat me to it. But yeah, I often rely on my hair as insulation. Seems to work pretty well. Even when it’s wet, the ice on the top only adds wind protection.

    bmonk: Hair? If it isn’t there, it doesn’t insulate.

    @Saskfan

    Yes, it is. First, she said 90%, not 50%. Second, you do not even lose 50% through your head. Heat takes the shortest route out of the body, which means you lose heat from everywhere. It does not all funnel up through the narrow neck just so it can escape from the head.

    @moderateisntleft

    That is correct, which means it is an old wives tale that you lose 90% of your heat through your head.

    I suppose if it were possible to completely cover your head and expose your butt, you would lose most of your body heat through your butt, no?

    I can’t help it if you are too tall for your hair. . . .

    @exoticdoc2. Saskfan (50%) is correct. The brain uses 20% of a person’s blood and moreover is surrounded by bone, which is a good heat conductor. unlike fat and muscle.
