Roland Hedley was created before O’Reilly had a national career, and the resemblance between the two is scant. O’Reilly has a confident, strong personality without being overbearing (contrasted to Keith Olbermann). He comes across as well-educated, even though he eventually offends everybody.

Hedley was originally inspired by Sam Donaldson, with major embellishments that erase most of the similarities (with Donalsdon and every other broadcast journalist). Hedley is a marginally-educated small-fry reporter with a vastly inflated opinion of himself. He is more than just a sensationalist; he often hypes trivialities as if they were important news. (He inflates the news like he inflates himself.) There was never an invention so suited to him as Twitter. He is also a sucker for fads. Wikipedia says that he exaggerates the personal danger he’s in when he does his war correspondent gigs.
