I’m not sure it was a matter of Schulz developing issues so much as perhaps concluding that his strip might resonate more with readers (and generate more readers to resonate with) by tapping into the insecurities that most of us grew up with and still have to some degree. Still have a VCR hooked up to the TV at our getaway on an island north of Seattle. HAD to watch it when I was up and the cable was out and somehow survived. The thing about VHS tapes is that you can pick them up dirt-cheap at thrift stores and a great movie is a great movie whether you’re watching it on Blu-Ray, DVD or VHS.
