Before the fetus has a nervous system connected to the brain, before the brain is developed enough to have brain waves, then actually, it is a very safe assumption that it cannot perceive pain. When someone at the end of their lives does not have brain waves, does not have nervous system communication to a functional brain, then we are quite certain that they are not “feeling pain.” What special magic is there supposed to be which makes it function differently before development is complete?

All but the most right-wing ideologically driven groups of physicians and researchers have set the minimum, earliest possible time that a developing fetus can feel pain as after week 16 of development, with the likelihood of it only becoming significant after weeks 18-20. That is well before the vast majority of abortions, which happen when the only fully functional human with any level of consciousness is the mother — who oddly enough has a life worth worrying about as well.

But hey, if a false equivalency and false assertion can be used to support a right-wing talking point, well, that has never failed to happen.

By your argument, every time you have a glass of wine or take a tylenol, you cause your body’s cells pain! STOP DOING ANYTHING.

I understand that the web design for the new site and channel will be done by Mike Greer, the former chief technology officer for The Onion. Presumably he appreciates the fact that some people provide a parody of themselves without anyone having to exert any real effort.

Actually, they weren’t even chased off a cliff by guys with cameras. The guys with cameras paid local children to catch lemmings for them, then they chucked them off the top of a cliff from buckets and filmed from below.

Yes, Disney has a lot to answer for.

Which means that for a low-paid shop floor worker, things like an IUD may very well be completely out of reach. Contraception is covered under medical insurance in the first place because not all types are cheap – and before you say, not all types are suitable for all people, either.

Also, this is going to be very rough on the women who get the Pill to cover conditions like endometriosis, which is common.

Considering how many times “marriage” has been redefined over the centuries already, a change to make it more available to adults who love each other should not be an issue.

…Do also note that marriage is a legal status, even more than a religious one. Atheists marry, and secular authorities have been able to perform marriages for centuries. Expansion of the legal category does not threaten religion.

Both terms have been in use for decades. They refer to different aspects of the phenomenon.

“Global warming” refers to the fact that the overall heat content of the earth’s atmosphere (and oceans) is increasing.

“Climate change” is the effect of that growing heat content.

See, for example, the discussion at http://pmm.nasa.gov/education/articles/whats-name-global-warming-vs-climate-change.
