After 9/11 and even before the shoe bomber, someone predicted that the only truly safe flight is one with the passengers naked and handcuffed to their seats. It hasn’t come to that, so probably won’t at the movies, but neither is TSA operation any better than “security theater”, rather than true security. The same will doubtless be true of whatever security measures are adopted for movies.

But after all, Mr Holmes didn’t buy a ticket anyway, did he? Maybe the solution is to booby-trap emergency exits. Or no, that wouldn’t work . . .

“freedom of speech” is a right that protects the speaker from government action (except of course libel, fraud, lying under oath, and so on). It has nothing to do with protecting the speaker from negative reactions by other citizens. Chick-Fil-A’s freedom of speech (and mine) are uncompromised by my declaration that their free speech reveals them to be boorish, ignorant, and downright mean-spirited. Nor by my hope that their business suffers as a consequence.

Well, look, can in the sense of “be permitted” is a natural semantic development. May itself used to mean “be able to” (its nomen agentis is might, and dismay used to mean literally “render powerless”). So the colloquial use of can to mean “be permitted” is a natural development. (Can used to mean “know how to”, cf.canny.

So “harbor wave” (which is what tsunami means) is an improvement?

I think a better caption would have been “the guardians of democracy”

I must have missed something. I’m a news junkie but I haven’t seen anything about Obama “running around all over the country bragging” about his position on same-sex marriage. (He’s never been hostile to gays as such in any case.) What about DADT and DOMA?

Is “Canis lupus”, not “Canis Lupis”. Linnaean names capitalize the genus but not the species. “Lupis” could be an ablative or dative plural, “dog from wolves” or “dogs for wolves” or “dogs with wolves”.

Didn’t know that about wheeling patients. But if it’s that much of a breech of good hospital practice, you’d think that the staff would have fingered the “ringer” long before the inspector got there.

Counterfactual. It’s a good idea to read the actual report, rather than rely on “commentators’” distortions (including this cartoon).

The comparison of stars to figs is a telling commentary on the prophet’s theory of celestial mechanics. Of course, other biblical passages make it clear that the “sky” is a structure of some sort, a dome apparently, studded with lights and wheeling around the earth. It serves to separate the heavenly waters from the earthly ones; rain is the heavenly waters falling through holes (“windows”, literally).
