An environmental group doing research on the impact that large christmas tree farms makes on the environment came to the conclusion that they can actually be a good thing. While they generally don’t do any good for biodiversity they do take large amounts of carbon out of the atmosphere.
So, as long as your old tree doesn’t get burned at the end of the season, and ends up being chipped into compost, or even just ends up in the land fill, its doing no harm.
Oh, that also assuming that the grower isn’t using a bunch of chemicals in the fields.
Oregon is full of big christmas tree farms. If you buy a cut tree in the western US, your tree was probably grown here or in Washington.
