For anyone thinking of trying this at home – grapes are actually toxic to cats. And lilies are even worse. A cat that eats some lily and doesn’t go to the vet until there are symptoms is probably a dead cat. (we had a $2000 vet bill)

Yep – grapes are toxic to cats (as are lilies – that was a $2000 vet bill)

I once saw our cat creep up to and stare intently at a patch of ground. I came up behind him and he suddenly “punched” the ground and had his leg shoulder deep in a tunnel. Didn’t catch the critter – I think my plodding scared it off.

The power plants generally use fossil fuels, but if you run through the efficiency of an internal combustion engine versus an electric power plant, the electric power plant is much more efficient. So distance traveled per CO2 released is larger.

And another big advantage for electric/hybrid cars is that when you hit the brakes, the energy is stored up to be used again. With a conventional car, the brake pads get hot, and then that energy is gone.

@LobosSolos No actually, the supposed “studies” showing Hummers were cleaner than Priuses were based on made up numbers. If Toyota were really using the amount of resources these studies claimed, then they would be selling the Prius at a massive loss, and their annual reports wouldn’t be able to hide this.

No, but the people who stand on the ‘walk’ side of an escalator and ignore the line building up behind them do.

“The “Sex Offender/Domestic Abuser” could just as easily been a cyclist. So the generalization implication simply is not applicable, unless of course you have no real basis on which to argue your point.”

I’m not quite sure what you’re trying to say here – as in really I don’t know what you mean. I said “Let’s make a deal: I won’t generalize to all car drivers if you agree not to generalize cyclists.” The driver in my case was not just a sex offender, not just a domestic abuser, not just a driver with a lengthy record of traffic incidents, but also an uninsured driver.

“When there isnt a bike lane on a heavily traveled road but there is a sidewalk with few or no pedestrians, why cant you use the sidewalk? I would think that would at least be safer for you”

It would be illegal in most states.

“It is surrounded by hostile Islamic religious dictatorships of one ilk or another that hate it because the Koran tells them to hate Jews as well as the “infidels” of all other religions.”

Which is of course why during the inquisition when Christians were killing Jews because they interpreted the Bible as telling them to hate Jews and infidels of all other religions… The Islamic countries took in the Jews and provided them with a safe place to live.

Let’s let up on the rhetoric that’s designed to foment hatred, shall we? Otherwise we might seem to be hypocrites.

So that time I was cycling in Boston on a road without a bike lane in stop and go traffic, and an SUV pulled up beside me and the driver said “I don’t see a license plate on that bike so you better get off the road before I run you over”… Conversation went downhill from there. After calling the cops I learned that he was an uninsured driver with a 5 page driving record. The cop’s computer display had bright red “sex offender” at the top for this guy and a google search showed that he had been arrested for knocking his wife/girlfriend against a door, breaking a window with her head.

Let’s make a deal: I won’t generalize to all car drivers if you agree not to generalize cyclists.
