And that is the writers’ way of disposing of the 1960s sci-fi elements, as opposed to mid-1970s Gould, and later Tracy scribes, simply stoped mentioning it…providing a degree of “closure”…
Now, for one day and 3 panels, a little playful referencing is fine (and fun)…but, today seems to be going a bit far (if we need comic relief, we always have the Plentys).
There were “Brenda Starr” and “Terry and the Pirates” references, over the past few years.
It’s all “implied”, as I am certain Team Tracy couldn’t get rights from Popeye’s syndicator — but it makes for a nice 3-panel respite as we head to our next tale…
I think that’s a little far-fetched (and a bit too much into the “sci-fi” realm). I’m banking on the theory that Diet Smith launched the thing via remote control to who-knows-where (not knowing there were passengers aboard).
So, the bigger question is “What happened to the POLICE variant of the Space Coupe” (as first re-introduced to us in the 03/29/2011 strip) — was it dismantled, or once again, is Diet Smith trying to throw a “red herring” to the underworld element?
For those not in the know, the Law Enforcement version of the Space Coupe had a red dome light mounted on top and “POLICE” markings on its’ fuselage, and was last seen parked in Smith’s “Moon Suite” in 2011. I have always assumed the SC marked “Sparkle Penty” was Diet’s personal vehicle.
I have a feeling we will get to re-visit this storyline in the future, which is fine by me, as I have always been a fan of the tech side of DT.
Thanks for the (fun!) memories!
You will need a high hair do to hide the horns.
Not really — if you look back at Rick Fletcher’s rendition of Moon Maid, he was able to “conceal” her horns in her hairstyle…
“Cheater Gunsmoke” was a villain created specifically for the Dick Tracy cartoon put out by UPA, in the early 1960s…he sounded a lot like the Yosemite Sam character…
It appears to me that Team Tracy may or may not revisit this story, someday (since we don’t know the true status of Drs. Ghote/Sail — my guess is since there were no provisions on the Space Coupe, they likely perished). What this seems to be was a well thought-out “burial/sendoff” of the Moon Era — thanks for keeping us kids of the 60’s truly riveted, TT!

i dunno if its gonna be the space coupe vb… maybe the flying garbage cans?!?!
Doubtful — Diet Smith himself once said the Space Coupe could fly in any weather situation. As for the 1960’s-era air cars, that would be doubtful — now, the 1974-era air car could probably make such a trip given that it’s fully enclosed, and all..
