That child is screaming for rules and control, and some sense of order to her world. She is not a monster… she is a child who has never been given one moment of stability or inflexible rules. She is crying out to know how the world that makes no sense to her actually works, and where she fits in.

I forget almost every single anniversary, and miss every birthday including my own. I am very lucky that my husband forgives me year after year. I did ask if he wanted to do something special fora our anniversary this year, since it’ll be our 10th. And asked for credit in advance that I noticed what year it was, because sure as shoot, when it rolls around, I’ll have forgotten again.

It was never really about cake…

A few years back I went to visit my husband (then fiance) while he was getting his pedorthics degree in another state. He opened a text book, and showed me all the foot deformities caused by high heeled shoes. “So, when I fly home, can I throw all my heels out?” His response, “Please. I never want to see those on your feet. I love how they make your legs look, but it’s so not worth it.”

A few weeks ago, we took our 2 boys for a walk on a local beach. Our 2 boy scouts got a merit badge for being about to name over 6 different types of shells, 2 jellyfish, and 4 different types of seaweed. Then I walked away while dad was giving the talk about what the raccoon was looking for under the rocks… and hearing the gagging from da boys as they “got” what Mr. Raccoon was happily chomping on, espicially after dad helped them tip a rock.

Snerk. I spaced my 30th birthday. My boyfriend at the time (now husband) had to remind me what day it was.

It was so hard not to laugh when my 4 year old layed into my 42 year old roommate for throwing a recyclable into the garbage… 3 years later, the young man volunteers time on his weekends to clean up his school yard. Not a school project, he just came up with on his own it needed to be done.

And my six year old son got a weeks detention for hugging a girl who didn’t want to be hugged at a track practice, and put on probation. If he did it again, he would have been thrown off the team.

Snerk. I had a friend who let their baby play with a phone that was “disconnected”. The phone company was understanding enough to refund the charges for the hour plus call from the US to Yugoslavia. But- occasionally, they get calls asking for the the only word the woman knows- her son’s name. After 4 years, she checks on her friend.
