I’m sure it varies from school to school. In my middle school, the three grades were segregated by floor, so sixth graders and seventh graders practically never saw one another. At any rate, I’ll give my standard response here: a lack of conflict generally equates to a lack of interest. If Nate were to get along with all his teachers and if he happened to be on the same page with all of Trudy’s friends, there wouldn’t be much to write about. So that’s why the storyline is unfolding the way it is. My apologies if you think the plot is getting old. We’ll have to agree to disagree. All I can say is that all stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end. We’re in the middle. Thanks for reading.

I do all my own writing, I never show anyone the strips before I submit them. Thanks for reading!

Hm. Well, when someone asks Why, why, why?, I guess I should have the good manners to answer. Because, because, because. Nate’s a sixth grade boy who’s not very mature. He often doesn’t learn from his mistakes. So it seems reasonable that he might say similar things or react in similar ways from one relationship to the next. Characters behaving in characteristic ways is a staple of comic strip humor, so of course Nate repeats himself. Comic strip characters do it all the time. But if you think I’m just recycling the Angie storyline, I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree with you there. There are tons of differences between Angie and Trudy, as I think I’ve made clear. But thanks for reading.

The next one comes out in three weeks. It’s called BIG NATE BLASTS OFF. That’ll be the last of the series.

Yup, first mention of Dee Dee. She’ll make an actual appearance very soon!

You’re right. It explodes when I need it to explode. But if a bunch of garbage cascading out of Nate’s locker would distract from the story I’m trying to tell, then I just pretend it’s a normal locker.

There will still be comic strip compilations, but no novels.

The blog is maintained by HarperCollins, the publisher of the Big Nate novels. So because I’m bringing the novels to an end, the HarperCollins blog is also being shuttered. But before too long I’ll start blogging again here at gocomics. Not sure of the details yet, but I’ll keep you posted!
