The Pilgrims were illegals once…but what the hay.

In the 1940s when this was supposed to be happening, $5,000 was a lot of money. (“Only” wouldn’t really apply.) The operation would be close to $100,000 in today’s dollars; a $50,000 ransom would be close to a million. What a difference 70 years makes. If the Benders had Lana wishing for $250, today’s reader would say, “So her brother needs a tooth pulled?”

Never thought of it before, but I wonder if the cityzens of Dogpatch have good taste.

OK. Thanks. I guess I’m done. I’ve seen them all about three times (not counting the originals. There were so many good strips… about shmoos, Wolf Gal, Sadie Hawkins Day, Honest Abe, Nightmare Alice, kickapoo joy juice, and on and on. (Sigh……..)

The first sign of growing up: when you question long-held beliefs. On the other hand, as Linus once said in the Peanuts comic strip, “There is nothing quite so upsetting as the clobbering of a cherished belief.”

I wonder why it is apparently impossible to see a part of Al Capp’s work where Daisy Mae and L’il Abner are a couple with a little boy, Honest Abe Yokum. Does anyone have an answer for that? Thx.

It was a big effort to train that mammoth to “play dead”.

At my local town dump, fluorescent lamps are not routinely accepted because wounds can fester badly if you are cut by a broken lamp. To prevent this a worker carefully printed out a sign using a dictionary: "No F-L-U-O-R-E-S-C-E-N-T … (and here he must have felt he was home free) … B-L-U-B-S!

The “Extras, eh?” reminds me of an incident a friend of mine ran into while jogging in the Beverly Hills area. Jogging while Black in this area made him doubly suspicious to the local police and they stopped him for questioning. He confessed to being a UCLA student studying chemistry. The doubtful officer decided to put this claim to a test and demanded: “Chemistry, eh? .. What’s H2O?” (This was 40 years ago. MAYBE things have got a little better.)

Linus must have incredible eyesight to see that the moon (a quarter of a million miles away) has moved almost a sixteenth of an inch further away since the last full moon. All the scientific loose ends get tied together if the moon was created some 4 billion years ago when the earth was impacted by a Mars-sized object. The five feet per century number seems a bit off because it would imply that the moon is older than the universe. Linus is sure a smart kid, though.
