To those of you who wonder… We don’t do politics often, but we have always done it and we will continue to do it. Politics is a part of life. Hedge comments on all aspects of life. Also, judging by the always larger than normal response, politics sells. – Michael Fry

Sunday comics are traditionally, and in the case of Hedge, reliably out of sequence. Sunday deadlines (when followed) are 4-6 week ahead of daily schedules. In other words, today’s comic was written weeks before the present story line. -mf

Let’s put your graph in context. Yes, you are correct (as in not lying) that sea ice is higher than last year, but…

From the National Snow and Ice Data Center:

“This September, sea ice covering the Arctic Ocean fell to the sixth lowest extent in the satellite record, which began in 1979. All of the seven lowest extents have occurred in the last seven years, since 2007. Satellite data analyzed by NSIDC scientists showed that the sea ice cover reached its lowest extent on September 13. Sea ice extent averaged for the month of September was also the sixth lowest in the satellite record.”

There are year to year fluctuations, but the recent trend is clearly toward less sea ice. Your graph is correct as far as it goes, but it does not depict the recent trend.

Though it’s tiny, that’s an actual Banksy stencil: http://blog.nola.com/keithspera/2008/09/large_banksy%20photos%20sept%2018%20023.jpg
