Nothing that we’ve seen leads me to believe that either one of them has grown at all, in any sense.
“Oh. Well, that’s different. Never mind.” – Emily Litella
A year ago Toni asked Luann to be her Maid of Honor. There may not be any bridesmaids, because apparently Toni has no friends.-
Gunther designed all those wholly inappropriate costumes that Luann wore to read to the kids in the library for story time, and he designed the gown that she wore in the beauty pageant. All those creations were atrocious. He also designed the costumes with Quill’s and Tiffany’s play about George Washington, and those were perfectly OK, but of course there he had to confirm to historical models instead of allowing his imagination to run wild.
> I don’t necessarily think it would be a “D”. In the “real world”, it would unquestionably be an “F”. Of course, Gunther’s professor will proclaim his project the best thing ever and bestow him with honors for sewing the dress, because, well, Luann.

What is objectionable in this story is not Luann’s asking Gunther to sew the dress, as a favor to a friend. What is objectionable is our being asked to believe that this is an acceptable project to earn college credit in an engineering class.
Insofar as I recall, Gunther expressed no interest in (or aptitude for) engineering in high school. If he programmed a computer, or wired a circuit, or bolted anything together, I honestly don’t remember seeing it. Then when he went to Peru, all of a sudden he was a UNIX network administration and applications software guru, and when he came back to the USA, it was his “life plan” to be an engineer. If there was any evidence at all of this ambition, I wish someone would post it, since I wonder when it showed up in the strip.
> Ridiculous and unconvincingAnd thoroughly unnecessary. Had Luann asked Gunther to sew the dress as a favor, or even if she had paid him to do it, his doing so would merely be boring and predictable (given that practically everyone here, and elsewhere, immediately predicted it). However, being asked to buy into the premise that this is an acceptable college homework project demeans the readership. Is there anyone, anywhere, who read this strip and said, “Yeah, I can see that this could happen”?
Shame on everyone who thought Tiffany was sure to flunk out of Moony. Today we see that Gunther will flunk out first, after handing in a bridesmaid’s dress for his engineering project.
