    Chapter 12
“Ok Warbucks, I’ll check it out & get back to you if I find out anything”. Tracy disconnected the call and put his cell phone in his jacket pocket. He wasn’t very happy with what he just heard from Warbucks.
“Everything points to sabotage”! Tracy muttered under his breath as he walked towards the office Dr. Magpie assigned him to. He was glad he was hired to be head of Magpie’s security while the group was in town. “”Eight week run, not a bad gig. Get to earn a little pocket change on the side. Hopefully Warbucks lets me keep it”! He smiled at his little joke before getting serious again once he sat behind his makeshift desk, which was no more than a piece of plywood held up with some milk cartons. Tracy recapped everything he’d just heard. Seems like two persons of interest both worked on the preparing of Red Raven right before she exploded and were part of the ground crew that prepared the Warbucks plane he almost lost his life on. He shook his head recalling how Warbucks informed him that after one of the two was located near Warbucks headquarters and brought in for questioning they were barely able to escort him to a private room for interrogation before something Tracy never heard of happened.
“His head exploded”! Was how Warbucks explained it. “Ye Gads, Ghastly stuff”. Tracy recalled was all he could muster. “Tracy, it’s unquestionably the handy work of the Blue circle. Be very careful”! Tracy had never heard of this ‘Blue Circle” organization but based on Warbucks warning he knew it couldn’t hurt to watch his back.

Annie didn’t regret for one second taking the bus to Dr. Magpie’s showplace rather than calling a cab. “No sense tempting fate, no telling how many cabbies are looking for me”! Annie knew that however slim the possibility was that she would ride in a cab with a driver who wanted to kill her she wouldn’t be able to count on someone like Dick Tracy to save her again. “It’s a shame I had to cut out on him like that but this is something best done alone”. She thought as she got off the bus at the stop closest to the tent. She appreciated what he did and all but was afraid he’d just get in the way. “Let’s face it;” she chuckled to herself, “He is on the “old “side”! Walking up to the entrance she was glad to see about a dozen or so people lined up for the temporary jobs the traveling show offered. “Must be the bad economy”. She sadly shook her head while grateful she wasn’t the only one on line. “I’ll just be one of many, blending in while figuring out what’s going on in this place. Taking her place at the end of the line she was immediately confronted by the young man standing in front of her who turned around to greet her with a huge smile.
“Hi, are you here for a job also”? He eagerly asked her. “Yes I am”, Annie responded while trying to ignore him. What she really wanted to say was, “well duh, why else would I be standing on this line”? She quickly realized he wouldn’t take the hint as he continued to talk to her. “Hey so am I. We have a lot in common. I’ve been out of work for longer than I can remember”. “Well I just lost my job”, Annie answered, hoping he would leave her alone. “I’m positive it’ll be only a short term setback”. Annie sighed when she saw he was not going to stop talking to her. “Oh, I used to think like that also. It’s been years since I’ve worked”. “I always try to look at life in a positive light”! “Just when you think things are at their darkest and can’t get any worse something good happens”!
    Annie had had enough.
“Listen buster, who are you and why are you bothering me”? She quickly wished she hadn’t yelled at him once she saw everyone else turn and look at them.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you. I should have introduced myself right away.” “It was very rude of me not to.” “Since the day they adopted me my parents taught me better than that and to always respect the feelings of others”.

    Chapter 11

    .
Annie felt a burst of excitement running through her entire body. She found it impossible not to giggle out loud.
“Golly, I must sound like a silly school girl”. She laughingly thought to herself. She knew her “Daddy” wouldn’t approve, nor would Amelia. “Actually, no one would approve of what I’m about to do”! She shouted at herself as she looked at her reflection in the mirror. “Wow, I don’t recognize myself and I know who I am”! She blurted out loud in astonishment over her transformation. Annie knew that it made no sense spying on Dr. Magpie looking like she normally did. Not if someone who wanted her dead was there.
“Red hair’s always a giveaway, that’s for sure”. Annie was amazed how wearing different clothes, cutting her hair short and dying it black hair could transform her into a different person. “Let’s see them figure out who I am now”! She defiantly said out loud as she walked out of the door to her hotel room and into the thick of a mystery that she had no idea how it would end. The only thing that she knew for sure was that she felt like she was finally beginning to put the events of the recent past behind her and was actually starting to look forward with anticipation to whatever lay ahead.
“Funny that I have to become someone else in order to really become Annie again”. She thought as the door closed behind her.
    .
    Meanwhile, at the outskirts of town;
    .
Tracy was glad he still remembered how to juggle three eggs without dropping them. “Medicine show, circus acts, performance troop, what’s the difference. They all need short term local help whenever they come to a new city”. Tracy thought as he walked up towards the temporary tent put up on the outskirts of the city. He was confident he could land some sort of job with Dr. Magpie’s group that would allow him to observe the goings on without drawing too much attention to himself.
“Nothing special looking about this tent, although it does seem rather small”. Tracy pondered as he entered the tent. He wondered just how many acts went on inside.
“Hey you, old man! Get out of here before I break you in half”! Startled at the loud, rough voice that seemed to come out of nowhere Tracy turned to his left to see who was the source of the insult and the threat aimed at him. Expecting to see some middle aged, overweight cigar smoking roughneck ready to throw him out Tracy was startled to see that the person attached to the voice was a very young, extremely beautiful looking female who appeared to be in her early twenties.
“Wow did I peg that wrong”. Tracy thought as he quickly reminded himself it was never a good thing to stereotype. “Sorry Miss, I didn’t mean to trespass. I was hoping to find the person I need to talk to about getting a temporary job with the show”. Tracy waited for what seemed like an eternity for an answer, mesmerized by how beautiful the girl in front of him, who obviously was sizing him up looked. Finally she broke into a huge smile and walking over to him extended her hand out.
“That would be me. Who are you”? Tracy silently sighed; relieved he was able to get his foot in the door. Or rather the tent. “My name’s Tracy, Dick Tracy. I’m a retired police officer and looking for a part time job with Dr. Magpie. May I ask your name”?
“You may ask, I might tell you.” Tracy couldn’t tell if she was being serious or just joking around until she began to laugh. “Sorry, old corny joke I learned from my father. My name is Judy”. “Pleased to meet you Judy. “Hope all the jokes your dad taught you aren’t as bad as that last one”. “Hey Dick, don’t insult the hand that feeds you!" Tracy’s jaw dropped. “You mean,”? Judy started laughing out loud again. “Yes, my father is Dr. Magpie”.
“Fascinating!” Was all Tracy could muster.

    Chapter 10
    .

“Tracy, where the blazes are you and have you been able to track down my Annie”? Dick forced himself to suppress laughing over the phone. He felt it strange to hear someone as powerful and wealthy as Oliver Warbucks lose his cool like he just did. Tracy figured it was all his years of training and of being in extremely dangerous situations that prepared him to always expect the unexpected and to never get rattled. He assumed it was Warbucks concern for Annie that was causing him to express such emotions “I’m at my hotel room Warbucks and yes I’ve been able to track down Annie”. Tracy quickly brought Warbucks up to date on everything that happened since the planes emergency landing, including his feeling that the engines explosion was no accident. He did however leave out the part about how he and Annie were teaming up. “No sense causing Warbucks anymore agitation”. Tracy figured. “We’re investigating this possibility of sabotage right now.” Warbucks informed him. “My people believe we can prove a link to this incident and to the act of sabotage on the Red Raven last year”!
    .
Were you able to get the information I texted you for”? “Yes”. Warbucks said over the phone. “This Dr. Magpie of yours has done a very good job of hiding his past”. “Why do you say that”? Tracy asked. “The only thing we were able to determine is that his real name apparently is Martin D. Hudson.” “What else can you tell me about this Hudson guy”? “That’s the problem Tracy. There’s nothing about him in any records anywhere. It’s as if he doesn’t exist”.
Tracy knew his feelings about Dr. Magpie were just confirmed. “No one can just wipe out their entire past without some very important people helping them”. He told Warbucks who quickly agreed with him. “I’ll call you tomorrow to update you on how Annie’s doing”. Tracy told Warbucks before disconnecting the call. “Seems like I’ll have to pay a visit to Dr. Magpie”. Tracy said out loud while feeling a sudden adrenaline rush come over him.

“Annie, are you alright”? “Where are you”? Annie assured Amelia that she was fine and that there was nothing to worry about.
    .
“I’m having a ball over here! This little vacation away from everything was the best idea you’ve ever had”! Annie figured there was no need to let Amelia know about the little ‘incident’ that happed yesterday. Annie knew that Amelia would ignore her promise not to interfere and would come and try to find her. “Hey, it’s not like I’ve never had someone want to kill me before”. She thought as she suppressed a grin. “Amelia, were you able to get that information I texted you about yesterday”?
    .
“As much as I could. This Dr. Magpie of yours really is a mysterious person. The only thing I could find out is that his real name is apparently Martin D. Hudson. His whole history is a blank”. Annie was disappointed but not surprised to hear this. “OK, thanks Amelia. You didn’t tell “Daddy” about any of this, did you”?
    .
“No, certainly not. You know I’d never break a promise to you”! Annie was satisfied that Amelia was telling the truth and after promising Amelia that she would call her in a few days Annie went back to the task of reviewing all the information she could find over the web regarding Dick Tracy. “Very impressive resume, that’s for sure”! She thought as she waited for his call. Meanwhile Amelia Santiago, wondering just what it meant that her source told her Warbucks had also requested information on Dr. Magpie began making preparations to get her plane ready for flight.
